This charming middle grade sorry was exactly what I needed to pull me out of a reading slump. It was so easy and fun to read.
The premises of a young girl bring accidentally fed magic and the consequences of this was very interesting and the found family elements were delightful. The characters were charming and full of life and humor. The wide variety of characters and perspectives also made the plot move quickly and helped keep the book interesting and engaging since the plot is quite simple, though very well executed. I also found the themes around sorrow and memory very interesting, especially when explored in a way suitable for children. I did find the ending a little rushed and underwhelming given the buildup but I really enjoyed reading this book.

This was SO good. I absolutely loved it. It reminded me a lot of my very favorite book, [b:The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making|9591398|The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, #1)|Catherynne M. Valente|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388179691l/9591398._SY75_.jpg|6749837]. They both have this magical quality where you just get lost in the words and the story. It's the kind of fairy tale that makes your heart swell, and you finish with tears in your eyes.
2.5-3 stars :"/ v magical n wholesome but not rly for me, i felt rly detached to the story n didnt really care for any of the characters that much even tho they were interesting in theory, i feel like the writing style n the pacing was kinda off n i felt like i was supposed to ~feel~ something at the end but i rly didnt at all :"(

This book was so sweet! I could not put it down. I loved the characters and the growth that occurred in the book. I would recommend to readers ages 10 and up!
Graphic: Forced institutionalization, Grief, Abandonment
Moderate: Death, Mental illness, Blood
Minor: Animal death, Death of parent, Pregnancy
While there are heavy themes in this book, they are dealt with well as palatable for middle school readers.
I mainly picked up this book for a reading prompt for a readathon I was lowkey participating in.
I just didn't click with it. I was confused by the synopsis because even 170 pages in we hadn't even gotten to the synopsis.
I didn't know that the build-up to the synopsis would include both Luna and Antain's childhoods/growing up.
After almost 200 pages of build-up and nothing interesting to really happen I just found myself growing bored and pushing off reading this book.
I wanted to get to the 250 page mark at least, but I was being gravitated elsewhere to other books and decided to call it quits.

This book is written so simply, but it is so incredibly beautiful. I don’t have many words to describe it, but there was so much good in this book. So many small tidbits that I just wanted to wrap in bundles and open them on a bad day, phrases here and there that I just can’t get out of my head. I haven’t read a middle grade book for a while, but oh wow, this one brought me to tears.

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! Not only did it have wonderfully loveable characters that were fantastical but still felt brilliantly human, but it also held its moral at its core without ever beating the reader over the head with it. And therefore it came through even more passionately. It doesn’t hurt that the book is fundamentally about how love and hope triumph over sorrow—something I think the world is in need of a reminder about—and even though that message isn’t new the book made it feel new. I felt the message creeping up as the book continued. Until it shone through and inevitably had me sobbing. Plus I never felt the fantasy elements were strange or just a vehicle for the message. The world building was subtle but thorough and enriched the narrative.
Side note: the voice actor/narrator was amazing (and also deserves 5 stars), so I highly recommend the audiobook.
