I love the worlds Charlie Holmberg creates and, for that, I’ll keep coming back for more. I will also, however, limit my expectations in terms of character development and how in the world this plot makes a lick of sense. But, it’s fantasy so, sure - why not?

Good Gourd this book was tedious and simple-minded. There are about ten pages-worth of an interesting idea for new magic concept, and then it just gets slam-buried by never-ending, repetitive inanity.

the romance angle was a bit thin. more on the magic elements would've been interesting.

Strange, unique world. Kind of felt like a dream where things were making sense then they didn’t. Don’t think I’ll read on, but it was a fun break from the usual.

Entertaining. The pacing was a bit off (it messed up the character development which is hard for me as I'm a character centered reader), but fun concept. Light read and I liked it enough to move on to the second book.

I picked this one up on a whim because I loved the cover art. Yes, I often judge books by their covers.
It worked in my favor here because this was super fun.
In an AU Victorian or Edwardian era, magical learning is reserved for those most dedicated to studying the practice. Our girl Ceony is very driven. She wants to bind herself to metal and become a metal-controlling magician, but there is a lack of paper-controlling magicians these days, so she's reassigned. Her new magical mentor shows her all sorts of wonders that can be performed using paper magic, and she falls in love with both the practice, and with him.
His evil ex has other plans, however, and Ceony, girlboss protagonist that she is, throws herself in the middle of an epic magical battle.
This book is fast-paced and the world building is super interesting. It's a nice mix of vintage/historical and modern/magical, and feels believable. I couldn't wait to snag the next few in the series.

Easy read. The story felt original, my only very minor complaint is that I don't really buy Ceony's seemingly random attraction to Thane. I don't know if adding a romance component is necessary for this story.

I enjoyed a new take on a magic world. I think Ceony is going to go a long way with being bonded to paper. I also love Fennell so much!
