The story was a little gross and gruesome but it definitely kept you guessing and I did want to read to the end to find out what happened. I did not like the relationship between the two main characters. I felt like the character development was minimal and I could not understand why she was constantly drawn to him.

I read this book in one day not out of immensely enjoying it but purely because I wanted to finish it. I knew going into this I’d either really enjoy or really dislike it, based solely on the fact that it’s a self-published author. I’m totally open to try lesser-known authors, but Plain Jane was just that: plain, plain, plain. I didn’t like any of the characters really, the story had its moments but completely lost me with the lack of depth and never-ending typos. I’ve read detective/suspense novels that had super, super short chapters and multiple perspectives, but the difference is that those short chapters and character changes make sense in other books. In Plain Jane, I honestly felt like I was reading poorly written fan fiction by twelve-year-olds. The language was boring. Her grammar and syntax were all over the place. It was incredibly distracting to read it. I feel like I like the idea of this book so much more than the actual book. It had components that it needed, but the execution was done so poorly that it couldn’t save itself. I wanted to like this one but it had too many strikes against it by the end.

It took me a good few chapters to really get into this book mostly because Kent really got on my nerves for the majority of the book, however eventually he started to grow on me, and I started to like the characters a fair bit. Other than the characters I think the plot of this book was actually really good as it was just so strange.

I really liked this book. It was my first murder/mystery that I read. Before I would always watch murder mysteries on Hallmark, and some of them were based on books. I had never read a murder mystery before now though. I loved it. Definitely surprised me.

One the one hand: a compelling page turner. On the other hand: stuffed with ridiculous stereotypes and unrealistic consequences.
Recommendation: Add this to the trashy romance/guilty pleasures bin.

The plot was by far the driver of this story. It was interesting, it flowed well, and had plenty of twists and turns that were truly unexpected. The characters left a little to be desired for me. They were a little flat and the pace of the plot did not lend itself well to more developed characterization. Some misused (read: unedited) word confusion was hard to get past, specifically affect/effect, lead/led. Kindle formatting could use some work, as there were several awkward page breaks and several blank pages. The story itself was grotesque and enjoyable and made my treadmill time go much faster.

Solid storytelling

I really liked this book. It had solid characters and plot that kept me reading. Finished the whole thing in a day, just didn't want to put it down and needed to see if my theory was right.
No spoilers here. Seriously not for the faint of heart. I really look forward to reading this cool indie author's other books.

Fast-paced, gruesome and packed full of tension with generally messed up characters in both the heroes and the villains.

I enjoyed this story and would recommend if you want to read a thriller which doesn't go where you would expect.

My only complaint is that Nicole was a very submissive, weak character who it was challenging to respect. But I think that was what the author was going for...

This is a stunning series with great characters and plots that do them justice. For those who crave the intellect and unpredictable behaviour of The Mentalist, Sherlock and House, this is a series that you cannot pass by.
