I love when a book has a genuine jaw-drop "woah I did not see that coming" moment and this one did for me. I was a little slow to get into but once I did, I didn't want to put it down and it didn't disappoint.

I had difficulty getting into this. Perhaps I will try again when I'm more in the mood.

Other than a few questionable/implausible plot devices that I was willing to ignore, this was a very listenable mystery. There was one surprise near the end that really floored - and tickled - me and changed my thinking about a great deal of the prior story. I'm not usually one to enjoy the 50/50 mystery/romance - I like the "hardcore" mystery with limited romance - but this one wiled away many hours driving back and forth to work.

I loved this book! I loved Dawson!
Despite everything Dawson has been through, and his attempts at being a grumpy old man, I really enjoyed his character. He was refreshingly different to me. Tough to the core, until playing in the sand with two little boys. Smart and observant, but understanding enough not to point out when others are less aware. Dawson made this book for me. He drew the characters together with a common thread, and I saw them through his eyes.
Jeremy Wesson was also a strong character. Not necessarily likeable but I couldn't hate home either. Good job Brown - you showed us that even evil people ca have a good side (ok, maybe not Jeremy's dad, but...)
Particulars don't seem important in this book, although I remember most of it easily. I think it was more the feelings and the lessons I took from this book that made me enjoy it so much. Oh that - and the lack of the predictable!

Deadline was... not great. The plot had a lot of promise: young widow is being stalked by maybe her not so ex-husband while an intrepid journalist tries to write a story that could make his career. Throw in a Ruby Ridge-style knock off, a wanna-be Bonnie and Clyde and you have the potential for a great book. Unfortunately, Sandra Brown and whoever edited this squandered the opportunity. Brown continually misused who and whom, which is minor but irritated me to no end. The characters were not likable in the slightest. The sex scenes were very, very, very poorly-written attempts at porn. Basically, the only reason I'm not giving this one star is because there was a neat little twist at the end that was sadly overshadowed by the aforementioned porn. As a side note, that previous sentence is how you properly use big words without being awkward about it in case Brown or any of her editors is curious because their constant awkward use or flat-out misuse of "big words" also grated on me.

A journalist researching a murder trial falls for the victim's widow. He's complicated, troubled but he cares very deeply. She's gentle but tough, with a fierce protectiveness for her sons. The romance is a delicious, sensual slow burn, with an emotional intensity that is weaved perfectly into the overall story. They don't want to have feelings for each other but they couldn't help themselves.

I loved the kisses, the yearning and the moment they completely give in. There's something about their romance that just works for me, and I loved his relationship with her sons. The suspense had me whirling, irredeemable villain and unexpected twists all the way! And the epilogue is lovely! 🙌🏻

A good 4-4.5 stars. I thought it was gonna suck but it was actually really good! Loved the plot and it just kept getting messier and messier with twists that I did not expect at all. A little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance it was perfect!
