Magic stars definitely has me chomping at the bit for book 9 in the Kate Daniels series. Derek and Julie go on a mission together to avenge a murder (well several) and retrieve a magic article (OK a rock, but article sounds better) with some engaging bantering between lots of killing and some magic-ing. Aside from being a fun little adventure, a good bit of character development took place for both Derek and Julie and sets the stage for a possible future relationship which promises to be both sweet and hot.

Derek really has been affected by the scars on his face. Since he’s no longer a pretty boy and able to charm intelligence out of people and therefore not much of an asset to the pack’s security team - his lone wolf status intensified. His separating from the pack with Curran – while it feels right to him – further solidifies his isolation. He became “the Grey Wolf in the city; the one who came and found you if you fucked up and hurt the wrong people”. He gave up on romance at the same time he lost his looks since girls either give him wide berth or judge him “just disfigured enough to be desperate” – but he carries a torch for Julie despite that he judges her too young and tamps it down.

Julie for her part has become a very mature, intelligent and capable 16 year old. Clearly Kate’s daughter and following in her footsteps and already having a few secrets of her own. I really like her. She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with. The crush she had on Derek is still there, but it’s matured as well into real care and concern. If Grey Wolf #1 is going to be a Derek and Julie spin off, I’m totally on board. Secrets are revealed that indicate Julie is going to play a significant part in future events in the Kate Daniels world.

As usual, Ilona Andrews doesn't disappoint!

Coming into this book, I had no expectations. In fact, I hadn't had a chance to read the blurb about the book too, so I was going in blind and damn, the book just blew me away.

If you love the KD universe, READ THIS BOOK! There are atleast 2-3 events that has taken place in this book, that is definitely setting up for the coming books in the KD series.

Why you would love this book;
1. It's written from Derek's POV, making him the star of the book.
2. Julie is in it, kicking ass and taking names.. well if she cld be bothered taking names.
3. The insight we get into Derek's thought process and struggle.
4. We see how far Julie' come.
5. Great build up to the end.
6. Unexpected things happen!!

The end definitely blew my mind. Like whoa! What's that all about? Some serious foreshadowing is happening!

Light entertainment, about all I could handle with an ugly chest cold. It took my mind off the congestion and headache for a while. This entry in the series focuses on the lone grey wolf, Derek, and pretty much exists outside the regular stor arc that runs across the main novels, so it would be one anybody could read, even if they haven't read the others. Embarrassingly silly, mindless entertainment, but OK for its genre.

A new series within the Kate Daniels universe with Julie and Derek as, apparently, the main couple. Although is too early yet. They both have feelings for each other that much is obvious. Would the development of this relationship be as that of Kate's and Curran's? Hope not. The bad guy was defeated but that's not as important as the fact that Roland has been teaching magic to Julie, that is bad, really bad. Julie can now use power words, oh boy! And Kate doesn't know this and I'm thinking that Roland is going to use Julie against Kate in the worse kind of way. I shall wait and see what awaits the Grey Wolf of Atlanta.
