This book was just what I was in the mood for. It's a story about a small village library and the quirky cast of characters who band together to save it when the council wants to close it, due to budget cuts. Joan is the main protagonist; she has been working at the library for 10 years. She's living in the past after her mother's death and loves the library where she and her mother spent so much time together. This book is emotional. You'll feel happy and sad and angry. If you like Beth O'Leary's books, then you'll like this book.

My mom read this and loved it before passing it on to me. When I added it to my “Currently Reading” list, I saw that I had marked it as “Want to Read” a year ago! Glad I finally got to it, because it’s a quick read, a cozy feel-good book about caring for others, taking risks, and making change.

A light read perfect for these hot days when you don’t want to think too much. Library assistant June knows a lot about the regulars at Chalcot Library, but they know very little about her. When her mum who was the librarian passed away 8 years ago June stepped into her shoes, and although she loves books and had dreamed to be a writer, she has retreated into herself. When the library is threatened with closure a ragtag band of regulars establish the Friends of Chalcot Library campaign, but can this eccentric band of people save the library and in turn give June a new purpose in life.

Hooray for libraries and the people who love them

The basis of this charming novel is a sad story that is all too real in many places these days. The resolution is a bit trite and I feel somewhat cheated by the way it comes about, but it gives readers the happy ending that we want, with some reservations. If you understand that the value of a library goes far beyond a source of free books to read, you will enjoy this one.
