This was okay, the characters were all pretty similar but their relationships are what propels the story. I never really understood what Cohen's problem was other than his being in love with Brett, I kind of thought he'd be more of a plot device but the level of scandal isn't overexaggerated in this book (which I don't think is a bad thing, just not what I was expecting).
I enjoyed the European backdrop and relearning about Los Sanfermines, really brought me back to my A-Level Spanish days 😂
English teachers would have a field day reading this one out loud - (there are a lot of slurs).

I think is a pretty good read. The way Hemingway describes what is happening really makes you a part of the story.
I still don't understand how young people who, presumably, are broke can live like that but I guess rose were other times and Paris was cheap at some point (?) Anyway, really broke me with the unfulfilled love story in a way. Very real.

This book drew vivid images of Paris streets in that succinct Hemingway style. The book even drew me into the bull fighting scenes. The treatment of the Jewish character Robert Cohn irked me a bit, but is consistent with its times.
So subtle that at times one might start to wonder why this slice of some very dissipated lives is a novel, so subtle that if one misses the brief, startling glimpses of what's beneath the surface it begins to seem tedious, the novel picks and teases and then slays with its final line--the coup de grace.
I read a book. How was it? Fine. When it was finished I started writing a review. It was fine. Later I had a drink and ate something before I finished the review.

Picked this up as my first foray into Hemingway's novels after reading "The Paris Wife" and realizing I had never read anything by the man himself. Plus, everyone told me that Hemingway is a great read. And it was - a good approachable read, very straight forward, solid book. There's not much in the way of plot, but more a character study of five friends and some tangled relationships set against the bull fights of Pamplona, Spain. The interactions were amusing and felt natural, although the dialogue was stilted and irritating at times. I was really captivated by one chapter that depicted the bull fights and fiesta and feel that the setting was well rendered and enchanting. The book definitely captures the feeling of the place and the era.

many slurs… definitely a product of its time.
