Better than the Descendants prequel, I'll give it that. Despite my love for the girls Jughead and Archie's plotlines are probably best, Veronica's can be exasperating in its high-class LA sentimentalities, and Betty's is... Mainly just boring, with a very abrupt conclusion.

Micol obviously has a lot of love for this setting and it shows. I was especially impressed by the references to backstory and events, as far as I can remember, only mentioned in the Riverdale comic series. Also enjoyed some of the occasional characterisation for side characters like Valerie.

Really this is mainly a read for those who love the Riverdale series, which I do. It’s a pop culture treat. The author did a good job with this prelude. Many things are explained.

I experienced a weird tension while reading this. I think because I had watched the whole series, so I knew what was coming, but it was eerie. If you are a fan of the TV show, this will be a fun, if unsettling, read.

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while will know that I don’t watch a lot of TV shows. My main focus is books. So, when I end up talking about a TV show on this blog, it usually means that I am quite obsessed! And, well, that is definitely the case with Riverdale. (You can read all about my journey with the first season of the show in the link provided in the intro paragraph of this post.)

So, when I found out that a book that would be all about what the four main characters of the show were up to before the first episode of season one, I knew that I absolutely had to get my hands on a copy!

I recommend this book to fans of the show, and even those who have only seen a handful of episode, or even no episodes. Because the events in this book take place before season one of the show, you don’t really need any prior knowledge to understand what’s happening. You might view the characters differently, due to this being your first time “meeting” them, but I wouldn’t worry about getting the wrong feel for them or anything like that, since the author did a pretty good job at capturing each character’s essence.

This is important because each chapter is narrated in the first person by either Jughead, Betty, Veronica, or Archie. This book was a fairly quick read, and is quite short to begin with, so if you need something to pass the time before the return of Riverdale this coming Wednesday, I think that you can definitely binge-read this book to prepare!

That’s Riverdale, Jughead! This prequel really taps into the insanity we recognize from seasons 3+ of the show, including epic conspiracies, ultra-convenient celebrity connections, and group chats. After having dug deep into the show, this novel really exemplifies that our team of four is strongest when they’re together.
