This was a second read for me. The first time I listened to the audiobook I highly recommend you both listen and read this work. I got a lot out of hearing Charly’s words in her own voice. Reading the words on the page allowed me to reflect on what was being addressed and see how those words impacted my own emotions. This is a great collection for women! It is broken up into sections of Age/Growing up, Mental Health, Body Image, and Love. I am so happy I purchased a copy of this so that I can revisit time and time again when I need a reminder we all go through similar things in life.

Favorite quotes:

“It’s wine on a Saturday and lies that you learn as foreplay”

“It is what it is until it isn’t quite it anymore”

“With the memory of when you ‘Cheer up sweetheart, the thing with People like you is they’ll only love you When you’re dead”

“You are solemnly bored of pity, of being bedridden…of performing”

“I got a fork stuck in the dishwasher And now I can’t stop crying Whoever said depression was glamorous Had clearly never considered dying Over a peanut butter-covered utensil”

Oh kale leaves How you depress me I only eat you So boys want to UNDRESS ME”

“I’m sure we’d never have grown up if We’d been told where we were going”

just trash.

i could not take this stuff seriously no matter how hard i tried. calling this book "social media's answer to carol ann duffy" is nothing short of a sick joke. and writing poetry about mental illness and heartbreak etc with the rhyme scheme and structure of a children's piece by john hegley feels like an actual insult.

don't waste your time on this.

Some good poetry but there was a heavy reliance on rhyme that made it choppy. The overall story represented was great and very relatable! The analogies used by the author were wonderful!

The poetry wasn’t bad, there were a few that I agreed with but I just didn’t connect with it. If she published another book, I would still read it though since she does have potential to grow.

Ich habe gemischte Gefühle bezüglich She Must Be Mad.

Charly Cox is an absolute fucking revelation. I've never been interested in poetry really, but the raw and honest way she speaks about body image and the struggles of being a teen/young women growing up in an age with social media and toxic societal standards had me nearly in tears.

I initially heard about her through a podcast, and sadly let the book languish on my TBR shelf for months. It's such a small but powerful book. And since she recently announced her second volume of poetry will be coming out in October, I'm going to pre-order it ASAP!
