An amazing story. I wasn't sure if I'd like it because I'm not super into romance. But there's not that much romance, just enough. There's a woman smarter than her time, a young lady who has a dream of being a physician. There's a plague and marriage proposal. This book is a mix of horror, adventure, love, just an amazing YA book. I highly recommend and cannot wait to read the next one.

Too much gore for my taste

Gosh, I wanted to love this one - but ultimately, it just didn’t affect me the way that I expected it to. The cover art, the premise, the setting - perfection. The parts of the book that left me with a furrowed brow are all going to require spoilers so I’ll refrain from saying more. That being said, the book was at it’s very best when Hazel was in her dungeon laboratory, becoming a surgeon on her own time - the patriarchy be damned. I didn’t actually need the love story of it all, you know? (I will say that despite other reviews to the contrary, I am so here for the ending.) I’ll conclude by noting that I think this book would have soared if it hadn’t been for a YA audience and that some of the misses for me were probably exactly for that reason.

In Edinburgh in 1817, Hazel Sinnett is a lady who wants to be a surgeon more than she wants to marry. As a plague sweeps the city, her interest in medicine only grows. The plague has been a bit of a boon for Jack Currer. a "resurrection man," i.e., a grave robber. Their lives intertwine and, despite the perils and the economic differences, they fall in love. I loved the gothic and sometimes gory elements of this story, but the love story felt a bit contrived and unrealistic given the timeframe and the distinct different classes of the protagonists.
