Confess

4 ⭐️ Auburn has recently moved to Texas to take back control over her life. When she accepts a right-place right-time gig at a studio for one night, she’s shocked to meet Owen and their mutual attraction becomes too powerful for them to bear, but Owens past and her own don’t allow them to have the future they want.

I really felt love for this book. I loved and cheered for Auburn and Owen each step of the way through their evolving “situation-ship” and cared deeply about them both. Auburns ability to persevere and overcome her circumstances and internal struggles was wonderful to read, with a steadfast committed Owen cheering her on. There were a few elements I could have done without, and there are some disturbing themes throughout, but overall it was a very good read and I would recommend it.

Okay, definitely not my favorite, but I doubt Hoover will ever get that kind of compliment from me. I didn't appreciate how young the characters were, I feel like we could've aged everyone up and the story would have worked fine. This is a complaint I harbor with a lot of her books. Some stuff was just down right goofy (his initials did not need to be OMG) and the writing itself for a lot of the story was goofy. The inclusion of Owen's father feels kind of out of left field for a bit of it. I hated the detailed description of the sexual assault she experienced, and I hate how much violence against her occurred in this book. I do appreciate that she made the police officer the worst (they are usually), but that's one of the few compliments I could give it.

1.25/5 stars

It was 5 stars, then 4 stars, now it's 3.5 stars.

I don't even know where to go with this. I liked but disliked so much. I'm all over the damn place.

The Good:
-Owen: I honestly liked him and his super odd, quirky attitude. He reminded me of a nice? (sic) stalker. His PoV was very Joe from [b:You|36430011|You (You, #1)|Caroline Kepnes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1549463282l/36430011._SY75_.jpg|39913517]. I honestly liked reading that style because it was so different than the typical book.

-Twist:
SpoilerSo, I thought there was a kid, but I didn't see that she had one and Lydia was taking over

-Art: The art was so cool! I loved the "confess"/[b:PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives|87640|PostSecret Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives (PostSecret)|Frank Warren|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1440869881l/87640._SX50_.jpg|84604] inspiration for the art, but to also include images... that was some next level shit.

-Emory: I loved her. I wanted to hear more about her crazy and kooky life.
"“She said stop.” It’s not my voice, and it isn’t Trey’s, but the words force him to stop. I glance up to find Emory standing in the doorway, pointing a gun in our direction. Trey slowly turns to face the door."

-Emotions: As with all of Hoover's books, this was an emotional roller coaster. I was crying and cheering! I was everything. Her range is just so wonderful.

The Bad:
-Auburn: Don't kill me, but I wasn't her biggest fan. While I did like what she did at the end, I also felt like she was super weak throughout the story.
SpoilerI can TOTALLY understand why, especially with the loss of the BF and her teen pregnancy. I also understand that she wanted to fight to get her son back from Lydia.

-[b:Romeo and Juliet|18135|Romeo and Juliet|William Shakespeare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1630631323l/18135._SY75_.jpg|3349450]: While this book wasn't a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, it was retelling of Romeo and Juliet, lol. I teach R&J, and it had so many stark similarities. The love between Owen and Auburn is almost instant and happens in a matter of seven days. They are also both very extremists, seeing only black and white. They are "fated," warned against each other, and Trey is a combo of Tybalt and Paris.

-Assault:
SpoilerNot a fan of how this was used. I feel like it is another box to check in creating a contemporary story. Trey's villainy could have been accomplished through physical and emotional abuse which we saw when they were at Target. It was apparent in the control he held over her as well as his position in the police force.

The Verdict:
Read if you like Romeo and Juliet. Skip if you know that Hoover has better stuff (cough, cough: [b:It Ends with Us|27362503|It Ends with Us|Colleen Hoover|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1470427482l/27362503._SY75_.jpg|43940889], [b:Verity|59344312|Verity|Colleen Hoover|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634158558l/59344312._SY75_.jpg|64581304], [b:Hopeless|15717943|Hopeless (Hopeless, #1)|Colleen Hoover|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1353489892l/15717943._SY75_.jpg|21389085])

I LOVE Colleen Hoover and have read most of her books, but there are still a few left for me to find and read. Confess was one of those. In typical CoHo fashion, there was some romance, some mystery, some drama, and lots of emotion. As usual, I loved the writing, but I have to admit I didn’t love the characters as much as some of her other books. They were a little harder to love. This book has some darker themes and trigger warnings I want to mention: domestic abuse, substance abuse, addiction, and death by cancer. I love that one of the main characters is an artist who paints pieces in response to reading confessions that are anonymously submitted to his studio. I love that there are full-color pages included of the artwork and confessions, and that the confessions are real, submitted by real CoHo readers/fans. Such an interesting and unique idea for a book. This wasn’t my top favorite Colleen Hoover novel, but it wasn’t my least favorite either. I enjoyed it and give it four stars (or one paint palette and three hand-written, heart-felt confessions). 🎨📝📝📝

I loved a few of Colleen Hoover's earlier books, but there are so many things that bothered me about this book. This will probably be my last CH book for awhile.
