Okay, several thoughts:
I am very grateful to Elayne (a true queen) for recommending this book. It was a wild ride.
The beginning dragged a lot for me. I understand the need for big, dramatic reveals, but I felt like I was left in the dark for a long time. It was frustrating.
The writing style was not my favorite. I found myself mentally rewording sentences a lot and getting distracted by the phrasing or word choice. This was, however, minimized by the sheer coolness of including real paintings in the book. That was sick.
It was really depressing. The love story was intense and sweet, but I just felt heavy for most of the book. Dealing with single parenthood, police corruption, drug addiction, cancer, and the death of immediate family members all at once is too much for me. I like realism as much as the next girl, but that was just sad.
The ending really picked up, and I’m a sucker for any drama that will make me gasp and have to put the book (or phone in this case) down for a minute to recover. It was thrilling, and this is where the three stars were earned.
I get why people are big Colleen Hoover fans, but I’m not sure that I can count myself among them based on this. I’ll probably give a couple of her other books a shot, but this just didn’t sit so well with me.

I’ve read/listened to five of Hoover’s books, and this is the third one in which I chose the audiobook. Of the five, I’ve given three stars to the ones I listened to. When I listen to Hoover’s work, it’s easier to notice the simplicity of her writing style. And it leaves me wanting more.
I didn’t connect with the characters in this book. It had potential, but I was disappointed with Auburn’s character development. *SPOILER* For example, Auburn sleeping with Owen when she was in a committed relationship with Trey. While I understand Trey is abusive, I was disappointed that Auburn went against her conscience in that moment. I get it: A moment of weakness. But I feel Hoover settles with a lot of her female characters, and she tends to make the men angelic. It gets boring.
I understand the appeal of this book. There was so much I loved. But what I didn’t love was enough to knock it to three stars.
