I was very excited to read this book based on it's early reviews but after the first twenty pages I had to double check to make sure I was reading the correct book. The only thing I liked about this book was the prologue, but by the time I got to the climax of the story, I had totally forgotten about the prologue. At over 400 pages, this book was full of unnecessary and irrelevant information and could have easily been reduced to less than 300 pages, possibly 200. Everything in the story was told not shown which resulted in the feeling that I was reading someone's diary. I found the entire plot to be ridiculous and unbelievable and the story was full of shallow characters and relationships lacking chemistry. I wish I could write something positive about this book, but unfortunately this is by far one of the worst books I've ever read.

Jane Cory takes on a fabulous journey, of someone who made a mistake, discovering that she wasn't the only one to make a mistake. The story is told from different perspectives with much feeling and cleverly brings in unexpected twists.

Urgh. This book was fucking tedious.

Poppy: I’m supposed to be a smart, independent woman but I make dumb choices and allow my husband to treat me like shit because I’m just a girl and it’s obviously my fault. I couldn’t possibly hold him to account.

Betty: I’m supposed to be a smart, independent woman but I make dumb choices and allow my husband to treat me like shit because I’m just a girl and it’s obviously my fault. I couldn’t possibly hold him to account.

Poppy: wah! I made a mistake and now everyone will hate me just like I hate me.

Betty: I’m basically a stalker but that’s ok because I’m a lovely person

Poppy: WAHHHH! Let me spend a couple dozen pages catastrophising everything and doing nothing to help myself.

Court: rehashes what we already know

Poppy: Waaahhhhh! I’m so helpless

Betty: oh FFS, here, I’ll fix it.

Court: rehashes more of what we already know.

Poppy: rehashes even more of what we already know, only with more whining.

Betty: I’m going to stay in a loveless marriage with an arsehole because I deserve it.

Poppy: I’m going to stay in a loveless marriage with an arsehole because I deserve it.

Me: Oh god, please just make it stop!

But it didn’t stop, it just kept going on and on and around and around long past the point of where it should have finished until the reader wished they’d been murdered instead of the antagonist.

The story was ok but it dragged a bit and I was expecting more of a criminal element or a mystery. For me, that just wasn't as good as Corry's other books. It felt more like a slice of life drama than a thriller. It wasn't bad at all but it just didn't peak my interest.

I am a real fan of Jane’s books so I was so excited to receive an ARC copy of I Made a Mistake, the book is set around Poppy a successful casting agent who is married to Stuart and they have two teenage daughters.

Poppy and Stuart’s marriage has stagnated over the years to the point that they are no longer intimate so when Poppy meets up unexpectedly with an old boyfriend Matthew she is flattered that he still finds her attractive.

Matthew left Poppy for his now wife Sandra and they also have problems.

Will Poppy be tempted ?

The second narrator in the book is Betty who is Poppy’s Mother in Law and Mother of Stuart. She also has secrets about her marriage to Stuart’s father Jock , and Betty has kept them for many years putting on a brave face for her family.

This is a fantastic read, I started and I could not put it down, the characters are believable and very human and the author has a wonderful gift of hooking the reader in and building suspense throughout the story and this story is no exception.

I liked Poppy, she is all at sea with her life and when Matthew pops up in her life again she is flattered that someone still finds her attractive. However, things take a sinister turn in this relationship and Poppy is scared that she will lose everything.

I loved the Daughter in law / Mother in law dynamic. I have been lucky with my mother in laws and have good relationships with them and I enjoyed Betty looking out for Poppy in the absence of her own mother. Dear Betty, she has had a tough life and now Jock has died she is living with Poppy and Stuart and the girls but has many skeletons in her closet.

As always there is a big twist and this is something that I love in Jane’s books just when think its all over something else pops up.

Fan’s of Jane will love this book and if you have not read one before then you are in for a treat.
