I am loving listening to Tenley and Hayden’s story. Both have a tragic past and their chemistry is on fire. I love that it’s written in both of their pov’s. Usually I hate when a book leaves me on a cliffhanger, but luckily I had the next book queued up ready to go.

Back when I was a full-pledged fanfiction addict, hhunting was one of those authors whose story updates became a weekly injection of my chosen drug. When I re-discovered my love for books, and have started blogging, I’ve thought about fanfic writers who truly could go toe-to-toe with the best of them. Helena Hunting is one of those writers.

Tenley and Hayden relive their own personal hell every day; the root of all is the debilitating guilt that they each had a hand over the loss of their loved ones. In an act of serendipity, these two will find a way to find absolution in each other. But the road to get there is not going to be easy, as their journey will be reaped with people from their past and present who refused to give them a fighting chance.

Having read the original work, I can see how Helena worked hard to give her characters new identities; identities that would separate them from the characters they were originally cloned. Indeed, if you read this book without any preconceived notions of who they were, it would be easy to fall into their respective stories without bias.

Gone also is the gratuitous foul language from Hayden. The author left enough just to make him own the character of a tattoo artist with his background. Tenley, however, was kept relatively close from her original character.

The story had gone through considerable overhaul. Because this was a favorite, and even though I’ve read it forever ago, I still remember all the things that happened in the original work. I’m glad she “cleaned” it up some; meaning, she eased up on the sex. This is just the first of two books, however. I don’t know what’s in store in the second. I think the bulk of the angst is yet to come.

I don’t care what anyone says about fanfic writers looking to make some money off the Twilight fandom. I say if you can back it up with talent, go for it. I know I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author.

I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review from Gallery Books on Netgalley.

Hayden is a twenty five year old tattoo artist. He is a reformed bad boy. He used to party and do drugs, but now he life is on track and he has a close group of friends and enjoys his work at the tattoo parlor. He expresses himself through his art and he is very talented. He isn’t looking for a relationship, but then he meets Tenley who works across the street at his Aunt’s book and antique store. Their connection is immediate, but each of them are sort of hesitant because of their wounded pasts. Tenley comes to him wanting a tattoo that has a very deep meaning behind it. Hayden agrees to do the tattoo and he becomes determined to find out the story behind the tattoo. These two have each experienced a horrible tragedy and it leaves them wracked with so much guilt and feelings of inadequacy.
This is a story that has been done before, however, I feel like it was well written and I absolutely loved how much tattooing was part of the story. Hayden’s tattoos all have meaning to him and he has an emotional link to them as well. Tenley wants to get a tattoo for the same reason. I never thought of tattoos of providing emotional healing before, but the author illustrates this very well and it was a big part of what made me like the book so much.
I felt like the relationship between Tenley and Hayden was very realistic and the sex scenes were perfect and not overdone. It did end on a cliffhanger, so beware.

I had really high hopes for this book, maybe that's why I can only give it 2 stars. I rarely rate a book this low. I had heard such great things about it and by 60% in I just wanted it to be over. I did force myself to finish though.

First off, I didn't connect w/ Tenley AT.ALL. I felt like her responses to things that she had been through were odd and I thought overall she was a weak character. She annoyed me. For someone that is supposed to be very intelligent she was not at all, not in the things she said or the things she did.

Then you have Hayden. I get the author was trying to do the whole alpha male thing, but in this case it didn't work. He came off as selfish and was just a flat out a jerk.

Given the history of these characters so much more could have been done in this book. I just wasn't feeling it.

The writing ruined a decent story line for me. I had no idea this was a Twilight fan fiction. It didn't seem that similar to me but, I actually enjoyed the characters and the storyline. The writing fell flat for me though -- too many of the same words were repeated, and the character voices as well as formatting were not consistent . I will read the second book just to see how the story ends but I probably won't ever reread them unfortunately. I have a FULL review on both books on my YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/GeAjcqNj5nY

This was a very dark and very sad story, but it was one of the best books I've read in a while. Both the characters have suffered more than can be imagined, but somehow they manage to find each other and offer a level of comfort that haven't had before or since their tragic stories. Tenley and Hayden will both break your heart, but there is also a spark of hope that had me turning the pages furiously.

Full review to come.
