All-New X-Factor, Vol. 1: Not Brand X by Peter David

I've always been curious about X-Factor and Peter David's epic tenure on the title. When All-New was announced, I thought it would be an excellent jumping on point (well played, marketers). It turns out that it's still steeped in ridiculous amounts of history, but it is relatively accessible. The story elements are all new, but the characters' pasts are ever present.

The characters are all very interesting. Gambit has a big fan following, though I found his Cajun a little infuriating with its inconsistency. Polaris is also very fascinating. I love that she is the team leader and how clearly unstable she is. I can't wait to see where that goes, though I am a little confused how she wound up the way she is. I'm hoping that it is revealed eventually, but I might go back through the last volume anyway and learn more there. Quicksilver is another nice touch. He brings some good humor and even has a plot twist of his own that I'm eager to see play out. The other members of the team didn't get enough focus to have a fully-formed opinion, but I'm feeling pretty good about it.

What really drew the score down was the actual storyline. It wasn't bad, it was just a bit meh. The whole point is to put the team together. It's done in an exciting and fun way, but doesn't really go anywhere. Peter David is definitely laying a foundation to go somewhere. I'm ready to jump on board, for now.

The art from Di Giandomenico wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to Anka's covers, which are stunning. Overall, the book is good, I just sort of hoped for more from it. I'm willing to give it another go, but I'm not sold yet.

I stumbled upon a few issues of The All-New X-Factor whilst buying the latest Sandman: Overture at me local comic shop, and I was both drawn by the minimalist artwork and by the fact that it featured Gambit, my favourite mutant. Then I got excited because--at long last--it seemed as if a Marvel writer finally GOT Gambit, and wrote him well. He was charming and funny and goofy again (and had a great foil in Quicksilver), as opposed to the lovesick disappointment he had become after storyline after storyline teasing a relationship with Rogue, only to have it scraped over and over (plus the utter mis-step of pairing him with kids and teens). And then? And then I found out this title has already been cancelled. So my opinion of this volume is moot. But here it is: It's fun and funny, and I liked the art style and the team. I was gonna hang around, after decades of not following a monthly X-title. But ah well. C'est la vie, n'est pas?

This is a weird team. I'm not super familiar with any of these characters other than Cypher and Warlock but they seem very thrown together. Not that that's a bad thing, I am intrigued by their dynamics. And they def nitely act like they only kinda know each other. The covers for this comic are very cool. I'm definitely intrigued by Serval and of course I'm very happy to see Doug and Warlock but we'll see where this story goes. I'm not quite pulled in yet but I'm enjoying it.

It has piqued my interest, I love a good X-men and I can't say this is exactly what I was expecting, X-Factor being a sponsored team for a corporation, Serval. I am interested to see how it develops.

I'm not normally bothered if I don't know huge amounts of backstory, but I found this really confusing. Not the jumping on point I was hoping for.

After a long disappointing stretch near the end of his initially excellent X-Factor run, Peter David managed to stick the landing and give a satisfying conclusion to his run. Something neither Bendis, Remender, or Aaron could do with their much shorter runs on X-titles.

ALl New X-Factor does not start nearly as well as any of those series. It's fine. It's the story of a corporate funded superhero team featuring Polaris, Gambit, and Quicksilver, with more familiar X-faces joining before the conclusion of the volume.

Tonally, it works. Peter David is still Mr. Dad Joke but the humor works in service of the story. I also appreciate that he doesn't open the series with the team having to fight The Biggest Threat The World Has Ever Seen.

If you've been a fan of any of David's work, I'd check this out. It's not his best, but it's better than a lot of the other X-books of its time. And if you're into Polaris or Gambit or Quicksilver, you might love this.

So, imagine you took away all the good things about the last X-Factor series. That's what you are left with here. The All-New X-Factor is completely uninteresting with some pretty terrible art (can't tell male characters apart). The book slowly adds random x-characters for no reason. This book has no heart. Peter David is capable of so much more. Overall, a disaster.

Makeup of this team is fun but it ended just as the entire team got together.

Why is Gambit the protagonist here? And why is there so much of his inner monologue? Would’ve liked to get a bit more from the others. Also, his accent is inconsistent.

Danger is officially my favourite. She’s strong and doesn’t care about social niceties.

The uniforms are terrible though. The worst colour combo in X-history. Otherwise the art is pretty.

Fun read. Going to wait for the next volume.
