Honestly, I enjoyed this book more than the first one! It was so fun and talked about great topics, that I think are important.
The most shocking was how the author talks about dating. I have never seen anything in kid's media of any kind that so accurately expresses what dating truly feels like. How it's weird, and sometimes uncomfortable, but you do it because you like the person. I loved the representation of that dating standard and trying to give examples of realistic dating. Greatly appreciated.
I also really liked how Jen just wasn't interested in dating! I am so glad that there's a representation of people to see that there are other things kids and teenagers can focus on besides dating, very refreshing. It helped me reevaluate how I react when I hear about dating potentials or the assumptions I make if two people are hanging out together. Do I immediately assume they're dating? Friends? Siblings? It was a very fun thought experiment and I am so thankful for this book for bringing my awareness to this unconscious bias to always assume romance in most situations.
Thanks again for the learning experience and a great & fun read! :)

as for the first book, this too was very cute and relatable with awesome art, but the ending felt a bit rushed and incomplete?
A solid follow-up to Stepping Stones , Apple Crush follows Jen into the fall in her new home. She gets a job, goes to visit her dad, and starts at a new school all the while her step-sister Andy (and everyone really) starts getting interested in Romance, much to Jen's dismay. Knisley handles the awkwardness of being a preteen super well, I just didn't connect with this story line as much as the previous book. This plot feels a bit more generic, which isn't to say it's bad at all, just a bit over played to my old crone eyes, the kids will really enjoy it though! I'll have no trouble shopping this one out to our mini fans of Telgemier and Chmakova books!
