There's a lot that's great about _Phineas Redux_, but in the end it seemed less interesting to me than the book in the series that introduced Phineas. I enjoyed the romance with Madame Max in this one  and the way that it followed on the courtship plots of _Phineas Finn_, but the murder part of the story seemed to devour the narrative such that the character development took a back seat to something that was ultimately less interesting. Still, it would be hard to neglect this book, so ultimately I recommend it!

It was nice to revisit Phineas. I felt the first Phineas book did not end satisfactorily so I'm glad his story was brought back. It was pleasant to just be back following our hero but the story really takes off when *minor spoiler* a murder occurs.

I ended up liking Redux even more than the first Phineas installment.

I am now faced with the decision of either continuing with the Palliser series or moving on, for a while anyway, to something different. Hmmmmmm.....

Phineas Finn is such an unsympathetic character. Stop whining! Great book though.

If you think politics one time used to be a high-minded thing, you should read Trollope. He would disabuse you of that notion.

In this book we follow the career of the Irishman, Phineas Finn - his rise, his near-fatal fall, and, we hope his HEA.

I do have a new literary heroine: Madame Marie Max Goesler. The ultimate in sensible women, she takes a high place in my pantheon of admirable women that I wish I knew in real life.

And Lady Laura Kennedy takes *her* place in the long line of literary women I would like to slap.

But that's just me.
