This is my favorite of the Brian stories that we've read. No distracting stuff about "the Secret" or his parents' divorce or anything, just a pure focus on Brian learning how to survive in a harsh winter climate. Good lessons for my son about persistence and patience and hard work. Not to mention some physics, geography, meteorology, and biology, too! :)

Another great installment in the Hatchet series! Honestly, this should have been book number two, and I appreciate the fact that the author listened to his readers and presented an alternative ending! As always, the audiobook narration was excellent.
Moderate: Animal death, Gore
I loved "Hatchet" so I figured I would read the series. I read "The River" and liked it, then moved on to "The Winter." I didn't realize until after I bought it that it was just "The Hatchet" if Brian wouldn't have been rescued. Had I known that, I may not have bothered reading it. I felt that it was not nearly as good as Hatchet, and that it went on entirely too long before it got to the actual "Winter" part.
My kids wanted me to read this, one of several sequels to Hatchet. One kid wasn't too thrilled with the ending of Hatchet, so this book gave an extended alternate ending. It went over well here. Personally, I thought it read more like fanfic, but whatever. Still interesting and I'm glad I'm not out trying to survive in the Canadian wilderness in the winter. Or ever

This one was really interesting to see how he survived the winter. The only issue I have with this book (and the series as a whole) is that they end so abruptly. I am not sure if I feel this way because I am not used to books that are this short, or if that is how "getting rescued" is- its abrupt and sudden... one minute you are trying to survive, the next moment something changes and you found your way home.

Fascinating idea of how Brian would have maybe survived if he hadn't been rescued before Winter. My 3rd grader loves this book.
