I think this is my favorite Brian book. It was certainly my favorite as a kid. I'm re-reading the whole series now, and I don't know if these books formed this preference in me or if it is an innate thing and these books just appealed to it, but I love stories that show in great detail how someone who is good at something does that thing. These books are all that. It's the literal thought process behind figuring our how to do wilderness things. So great.

First re read of this novel since I read it for a book report 12 years ago, glad to say it still held up and was a very enjoyable quick read if a bit predictable

The best of this series so far (I've read #1 & #2 before this). Props for the skunk love!

I liked the origins of this book - the author got a bunch of letters from fans, asking him to imagine what would happen if Brian hadn't been rescued. So he did.

I loved it

I think this book was really well written. I've reread 'Hatchet' on the 16th and it was good. I've had all the books for 2 years and I haven't read them because I forgot how amazing the writing was. For some part of the book I found that I was a hint smarter then Brian because I was thinking maybe Brian could dry the mean in summer and autumn so he would have some meat for winter. I love his writing and how educational this all is. I love the nature and living like Brain to me seems wonderful and he is sooo lucky he survived. I really had a connection with Brain. I think that some people would be maybe a bit disgusted by how he cleans the animals with all the organs and blood but instead for me it make me want to read more and the hunting/eating parts made me want to eat meat.

3.5 stars. Richard Thomas was a MUCH better narrator!!!

I really liked this book. However, it bothers me that this isn’t the “next book”... it’s the “let’s change the ending of Hatchet, pretend book 2 didn’t happen and imagine Brian wasn’t rescued until after he has experienced winter.”
