Lacking of the drama that characterized Hatchet, this merely read as a "Brian got lucky a bunch of times and then got rescued" tale. No real rising or falling action - a bit lazy.
I suppose this is the brilliance of Weir's 'The Martian': at once brilliantly simple to read and yet not lacking in plot or difficult scenarios.
Perhaps I need to head back to adult books now.

Really enjoyed this one! Easy reading but engaging, find it very interesting how Brian adapts and accepts his situation.

I liked it even better than [b:Hatchet|50|Hatchet (Brian's Saga, #1)|Gary Paulsen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385297074l/50._SX50_.jpg|1158125]--great sequel/alternate ending to the original.
I liked the survival aspect of this story a lot, and felt that it didn't shy away from the difficulties Brian had to face in the wilderness. However, the hunting scenes were pretty graphic at times and I could have done without that! Is it realistic? Yes.
I think Brian's Winter is my favorite book of the series. It's a different take on what would have happened if he hadn't been rescued by the end of the summer in Hatchet. While he still faced some incredible challenges, as he went through them, he seemed to gain wisdom and strength. There were a lot of times when he was fighting his desire to curl up into a ball and give up. However, at the end of the day, he marshaled his strength and kept moving forward. It's a wonderful read, and a lot of it is based on Gary Paulsen's own adventures. Highly recommended.
This book was a alternate ending to Hatchet where Brian had to survive through the winter before being rescued. I wish Paulsen had thought of this ending to Hstchet, but I'm glad he wrote this book. It was very exciting!

I think I liked this one almost more than the first one because this is the "what if" he hadn't been rescued at the end of the first book and had had to survive through the winter. There were two points in the book that had me going--without spoilers, the moose had my heart pumping and I was on the edge of my seat while the deer had me in tears. By the end, I felt Brian's heart feel torn between wanting to return and wanting to stay--that seemed very realistic to me, given what he went through. Wow.
