The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is one of those books that people either love or hate... and I loved it!

Alicia Berenson was arrested six years ago for the gruesome murder of her husband and she has been completely silent ever since. Not a word. If she did it, what was her motivation? If she didn't, why has she been silent since? What happened that night and will Alicia ever speak again?

Once I started, I could not stop turning the pages in this book and devoured it in two days! I've heard that some seasoned thriller fans guessed the ending ahead of time, but I didn't see it coming! The tension built slowly for me, climbing with each chapter, until I realized what had happened! I read most of this book on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed the ride.

All of that said, there are some tired tropes in here. Most prominently, the damsel that must be rescued. But I'm not sure how much of that was intentional commentary on our society's history with treating women as hysterical and how much of it is the author's true perspective. It could go either way.

As a college psych major, I had a great time analyzing the characters - all of them so messed up! And the ode to Greek tragedies was fun too. I ended up looking up a lot on Google and learning a lot along the way. All in all, The Silent Patient was a fast-paced mystery and fun ride!

I learned too late into this one that I was absolutely not the target audience. But with praise from AJ Finn on the cover I SHOULD'VE KNOWN BETTER!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed the first 1/3 of the novel, however there were certain tropes that began to weave throughout the story in the last two thirds that were off putting overall. While it was still a very great read, I was never once bored-almost every chapter it feels like something is happening, I think it just fairs well with a bit older of an audience than I am. I expected more, but there never really was much for there to be more in the first place for a reader like myself.

If you enjoy AJ Finn(for some reason, people do, and I question this every single day), primetime murder mystery television, or the ID network-this ones for you.

I am disappointed that this book isn’t worth the hype surrounding it. How the male author writes in first person as a woman is very off-putting to me.

There’s so much hype surrounding this book so I went in expecting it to not live up to it… but it did. Let me start off by saying that this book was very well written, it grabs hold of you from the very start and continues to grip you tight til the very end. Alex Michaelides perfectly dangles new pieces of information throughout the book that keep you thinking you’ve solved it and you know how this will turn out but I was wrong every time. I also have to say that this book was one of the books that I could picture in my head, playing out, like a movie, the easiest. Something else that stood out for me was how well done all of the psychology and art aspects of the book were done and that it was heavily inspired by Greek mythology. So when I googled the author after and I discovered that he’s a Greek screenwriter, and he studied psychotherapy, it all made sense.
This book truly shocked me! There’s a particular part, that literally made me gasp out loud, where everything clicks into place and you realize what’s going on and of course it’s the last thing you expected. I especially loved the symbolism of the snow throughout this book. One of the characters has a special connection with snow and it’s hinted throughout the book that snow is coming so when it finally does, it’s satisfying and perfectly ties everything together. I can’t rave about this book enough!

I don’t get the hype. I kept reading expecting something more interesting to happen but it never did. The actual big twist had popped into my head as a possibility early on so it wasn’t surprising to me. So many plot holes and loose ends that frustrated me. However, I did enjoy some parts of the writing and symbolism, especially with the weather. Other parts of the writing just grossed me out and were clearly written by a man in all the worst ways.
