My daughter read this book when she was at high school and I've been intending to read it ever since. The author wrote her memoirs in the book ([b:Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots|1746572|Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots|Adeline Yen Mah|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-6121bf4c1f669098041843ec9650ca19.png|1429862]), and then took the segment of her childhood up to the age of 14 and wrote it in this book for children.

At first I was finding the writing style too simplistic and I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the book because of that, but I became accustomed to the style and was soon fully involved in the story. I was so involved that there were several times I was almost crying at the loneliness and misery of that poor little girl with her disinterested father, her nasty stepmother, and siblings who were frequently cruel. This truly is the story of a Cinderella, but one of resilience that keeps her spirit alive.

Absolutely wonderful

it was sad but uplifting to know that she didnt give up and its a good book to read cried when they killed her duck how sad :(

It is such a great book Adeline she has been through so much in her life but, that didn't stop her from achieving her dream, she found the courage to move past her pain and shared her story with the world. She dedicated her book to all the unwanted children in the world and with this book, she lets them know that they are not alone that there is someone out there who can relate to what they are going through, that someone is out there and has been through what they are going through right now; THEY ARE NOT ALONE!!!!

Loved this story. Easy to read. I found myself deeply invested in the narrator's life, audibly gasping when ugly things occurred. Can't wait to read Fallen Leaves.

Adeline is the youngest daughter, but she is also the punching bag for all the members of her family. Her mother died in childbirth with her so she is considered unlucky. Her father remarried and while all the children from his first marriage are ill treated by their father, stepmother, and the two new children. Adeline is mistreated by all. All except her grandfather and aunt.

This doesn't save her. She is forced to live with any number of indignities and outright cruelties. As she struggles, she uses school to show her worth. Her family continues to make her suffer.

It is a story of ultimate triumph. Well told.

Some of the crueler moments are not for middle grade readers so this one is for YA.

I read this when I was very young. I left it outside and it got wet. My father managed to save the copy for me and lay it flat under a giant mason jar. It always had that dent in it and I read it anyway. This book is so important to teach kids the idea of poverty, of cruelty, of love and perseverance. I love this story and its bravery.
