I was in the middle of a book I was quite enjoying when I read the first book in the Lady Julia Grey series, and I was feeling it so hard that I immediately bought the second, which was just as enjoyable! In this one, Julia and many relatives and friends are all together at her father's converted abbey for a house party and for Christmas when there is a MURDER. I like that Raybourn takes her time setting the scene and introducing the characters and their dynamics before then, though. It makes things much more engaging. I am really into this series and glad my mom recommended it to me! And I'm sure I'll get back to that other book . . . when I've read all of these. A-.

Loveable characters:

I love Julia and Brisbane. They are both so clever. I love how they keep each other on their toes. I loved reading the part where Julia is all like 'Come, Brisbane, let us not quarrel. We must be friends again. I will tell you what I found in Mr. Snow's room after you left, if you will tell me what you have done with Aunt Dorcas.' and Brisbane’s completely caught off guard and, really, he should know better than to underestimate her curiosity and wit. But, oh, what a joy it is to read their tension.
I should note that Sir Cedric is a dick and I do not like him. Lucy deserves better.
I’m also thinking Emma might actually be a slightly terrifying persona and I'm here for it.
I believe there’s not much I can add to what I’ve already said before: Deanna Raybourn is an excellent writer who writes engaging and smart stories.

I just spent an entire rainy Saturday reading this book in bed - pure indulgence! It's been so many years since I've done this that I'm not certain if the 4-star rating reflects more on the novel or the experience, but I enjoyed it immensely!
This series is totally addicting. Not to mention absolutely perfect for a cold chilly day while your curled by a fire. As I've said before, fans of mystery, historical fiction, or romance should give this series a try. Romance fans do be warned though that the romance is sort of a 'will they? won't they?' kind of thing even in this book here. But for me it just ups the need to continue reading, plus I hear the next book may finally get some kind of resolution in that area.
Brisbane was as appealing as I remember and Lady Julia as spunky as before. The story was wonderful and I can't wait to continue with the series
Lady Julia Grey is a heroine whom I absolutely adore. As you may remember, I spent a whole lot of time gushing over Silent In The Grave, the first in the series. Silent In The Sanctuary is equally as wonderful!

3.5 stars really
Started the book wanting to shout "not a love triangle nooooo" but as becomes clear fairly early on, to the reader if not to Julia, it's not a serious issue. By the end, I actually appreciated it because the device kept Julia and Brisbane from pouncing on each other in the way they quite clearly want to. Raybourne is keeping the burn slow. A little lusty in places, but slow.
Once again, the whodunit was easy to figure out. Once again, I don't read these for the mystery so don't really care.
I also really hope we see Mrs. King again. She was quite fun.

I only recently stumbled upon Deanna Raybourn's books but I am HOOKED.
