Whereas Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was full of whim and charm, this sequel is an immature smattering of quarter-baked ideas, championed by a Wonka who appears more insane than disturbed genius.

This odd tale picks up where the first book left off (retrieving Charlie's family with the Glass Elevator), up into space with an alien battle taking place on a giant space hotel, back down to earth, then literally into the underworld and back again before wrapping up.

Save yourself the time, don't read this.

Didn’t love this. I think that the charm of the first book is missing.

I had a lot more fond memories of this book and I'm not sure why. I know I had the desire to write a screenplay adaptation of this book-and maybe that's why I remember it being better, because I had better ideas for it!

This sequel to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" picks up right where the first leaves off. Charlie, Grandpa Joe and Willy Wonka pick up the rest of Charlie's family and end up in space. They encounter a American space hotel, creatures called vermicious knids and more. I recently reread this, not having read it since I was a kid. It has all of the weirdness of the first book, but none of the charm. It's also a bit boring. It's just okay.

This wasn’t as funny as book one and was a bit weird. It still had its moments though. And I just adore Willy Wonka.

The characterization of the foreign leaders at the beginning of the story had me a little uncomfortable (China specifically) - though I did find it telling how they had characterized the Americans. Ha! It's a silly sequel - lacks the magic from the first, but the grandparents becoming babies is quite funny.

who the hell told roald dahl the thing we liked from charlie and the chocolate factory was...the elevator?

like, here is a definitive ranking for me, personally, of everything i liked in order:
- the sweets (obviously)
- orange guys singing mean songs about children
- someone turning into a blueberry, as a concept
- the idea that a chocolate bar could be life-changing (this was a great life lesson)
- wallpaper you can lick (now this gives me the heebie-jeebies, but then it seemed rad)
- swimming in chocolate (ditto the above statement)
- permission to spend my old age living in a bed with my husband and my kid's spouse's parents (the dream, i guess, at least the lazy part)

notice that nowhere in that list is "whimsical ways to get from one floor of a building to another."

whatever. everything about this book is a disappointment, so at least the title makes that clear upfront.

part of my review books from forever ago and get mad for no reason series
