So this is kind of like the movie Homeward Bound, which I loved as a kid. Except with cyborg animals. And probably definitely an R rating for violence.

A dog, a cat, and a rabbit have been cybernetically enhanced to be killing machines by the military. Unfortunately for the animals, they're just prototypes and after the success of the project is proved the military decides to decommission them. At which point they escape and all hell breaks lose. The military wants them dead and the animals just want to go home.

Even though the comic is pretty short, it did a good job of making me care for the animals. Each one has a distinct personality and little things like the missing posters for each of them just add to their character. Despite the feeling of animals vs. people, there's even a good human or two in the comic. Though the humans mostly get far less development, aside from the woman in charge of WE3. I was also surprisingly happy with the ending. Kind of sad due to a death, yet happy/hopeful enough to not be soul-crushing.

The art is pretty awesome. There's tons of cool things going on with panel placement and angles of view. The escape of the animals is told via CCTV footage, which worked out really well for creating a feeling of suspense. There's also some really well done action sequences. Also, lots of violence and blood and gore. Despite the cute fluffy animals on the cover, this is probably not a good book to give to younger children. At all.

This is an incredibly solid book. I can't really think of any flaws in it that negatively impacted my experience as a reader. I was worried with how short it is that I would be left feeling unsatisfied, but I think it explored exactly as much as it needed to with the time and space it had. It is incredibly gory, but I don't think of it as very gratuitous. I don't really think you can have an "animal military experiment" story that doesn't have violence as a major factor at play. The animals don't have broad personalities but... they're animals. They have as much personality as they need for the story to work. I truly believe this is the best version of this story we could have gotten. It won't appeal to everyone, but I love it.

Morrison's writing is not for me.

This graphic novel is pretty short, but the author does a good job at telling a concise but full story. The characters have very little dialogue but manage to convey emotion perfectly. The plot is simple in structure but contained everything necessary for a satisfying ending. I didn’t realize how much violence would be in the story, and some of the images are gross, but it didn’t feel gratuitous. If anything, comparing the likable animals to the gruesome acts they’re programmed to commit, drove home the themes, so this violence was necessary in that sense.

Rating: 10/10. Not because it’s the best thing I’ve ever read, but because at the moment I can’t think of anything I’d really change about it.

Short. Fast-paced. Action-packed. And it gets a happy ending! Loved it.
