I got this as a free digital ARC so I definitely got my money's worth, but I have to agree with what everyone else is saying; the comics that are included in the volume are excellent but there aren't enough of them. Four issues is already one less than I'd like in a volume and to have one of those four be pure flavor-text/bonus material seems really stingy. I'd hate for the publishers to shoot such a promising series in the foot when it's just getting started.

I really loved this.
I read the first comic a few years back when it came out so had forgotten most of what happens.

Fairly silly, very feminist, super funny and with some pretty good political and culture quotes/points thrown in. And some fantastic art.

Looking forward to the next two.

100% enjoy myself some good satire... except for #4. I’m all for world building, but this didn’t deserve an entire issue.

A decent idea executed decently. Even includes extras like posters and websites and ads. But by the end of the first volume, the overt feminism was getting to me. I'm all for it, but it adds up over time in these pages to the point that you can't miss it and it's kind of being forced repeatedly down your throat—to the point that it felt to me like the entire series was made to be some social commentary and did a rather poor job at weaving that viewpoint naturally into the story. The commentary became too contrived and heavy handed and wrecked the actual story for me.

Beautiful art and so creative. I’ve never seen a graphic novel like this. Looking forward to the next volume!

Disappointing. From the initial premise, this could have gone hard but instead it just comes off as kinda shallow and surface-level. More interested in it's own snark and background wordplay or jokes than the story itself (literally a whole issue is just a magazine of satirical ads). Cain literally putting Tweets about her in the backgrounds of panels is a bit on-the-nose for me.

Like lots of this subgenre of "only women develop X superpower / curse / biological ability" dystopian fiction, the whole thing comes across as white feminist and gender essentialist. At least in the issues I read (I read issues #1-4 and decided not to continue) there's not really any major people of colour or insight into what a world like this would look like for queer and trans people.

Plus, the story itself is moves quite slowly for what acts like it wants to be a viscious, bombastic series. The pacing is off for sure - not helped by the constant insert interruptions.

I wanted to love it completely, and I did enjoy it, but it also felt a bit disjointed and scattered to me. ⠀

Man-Eaters is a comic about teenage girls who turn into killer cats when they get their periods. I love the concept, but had a few issues with the execution. First, the entire fourth issue is a faux magazine, and it was just a bit much, and interrupted the story flow for me. Second, and more important, was that this book felt very "white feminist" to me. There are basically no characters of color, and the main character wears a pink pussy hat like the very controversial ones from the 2017 Women's March. The book isn't overtly or blatantly racist, but it's something worth mentioning.⠀

That being said, I definitely want to know what happens next, and will keep reading for now. The first volume ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I'm curious to see how this story arc will resolve.

An timely take on being a woman in modern society, Chelsea Cain's "Man-Eaters Vol 1" was a quick and different kind of read mainly for how it is a different kind of graphic novel. It was a good read, but not the best one I have read for either graphic novels, or twists on the patriarchy. However, I am glad it is reaching an audience, both young/old and female/male! If this is a step for oppressors to see the error of their ways and ideology, then so be it!
