This is one if the best comics I've read in a long time. Not afraid to be dark, doesn't spend an inordinate amount of time setting the scene, just assumes the reader can suspend disbelief and runs with it. I may have to get single issues, it's that compelling.

Hmm...not quite sure how I felt after reading this, and I'm not exactly sure what to write about it, which is why I'm going to continue to write a rambling review.

The last issue ends with a conversation between the writer James Tynion IV and the artist Eryk Donovan, and it seems that, like the random-ass sloth meme in the series, they weren't necessarily trying to convey specific "messages" either. Tynion says, "That's all I wanted to do here. Write something that made you guys feel something palpable and strange. Something that made you look at the world a LITTLE differently." If I use this as a measuring stick, then I think that Tynion accomplished his goal.

There are well-recognizable elements from horror and apocalyptic works. At its core, Memetic is a zombie apocalypse comic, except the vector is a meme and aliens/angels (Wha...?) might be involved. Sometimes Memetic felt too trope-ish for me, but at other times, Tynion achieves a surprisingly fresh effect on the readers. I enjoyed that, as any good short story does, Memetic made me wonder about the future toward which humans were evolving, the effects of increasingly rapid technology-aided communication/networking, and the value of the individual/conforming.

Can a meme destroy the world? Absurd and gruesome, this comic attempts to extrapolate that for us, leaving us mesmerized and plagued, incapable of stopping ourselves from hurtling to our own doom. I wish this was expanded by another issue or two; my only main complaint is that I wanted a bit more depth and time with the characters before the end.

Missed potential

The idea of information being able to physically alter the laerner is not new but is ripe for horror, this missed the mark for me. It felt like Clarke's Childhood's End mixed with a little Junji Ito body horror, Babel 17 or Pontypool, and some LGBT rep. How could it fail, right? I just never really got a sense of dread or horror. If anything, it felt more like an allegory for teen angst/loneliness and radicalization which failed to engage me.

I don't know why, but there are certain types of books and movies and things that make my right knee go berserk. It is hard to describe the feeling exactly; it's like all my tendons or ligaments are laces in a skate on the final pull right before you tie them up. Really taut, uncomfortably tight. It is always accompanied by the uncontrollable urge to extend and retract my leg, and it is never felt in my left knee.

Most often, triggering stories include scenes or detailed descriptions of drug use, but there are other things (certain kinds of body horror, for example) that can set it off. Describing the feeling actually induces it too, it turns out. Anything that makes me squirm, I guess, anything that provokes a particular kind of discomfort; I feel it all in my right knee.

The beginning was quite interesting and I initially liked the idea...
.... but then the last third of this graphic novel happened and
I Absolutely Hated Everything about it.
Ironically the only thing I ended u liking was the sloth - it made me quite happy. I keep looking at it.
