The first 200 pages were a little confusing but after the time skip it got a lot better!

The story started off a little slow for me but eventually picked up and drew me way in! Political intrigue, romantic subplots, and secret rogue armies kept me invested until the end. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I love a good shero!

Another great read to begin what’s sure to be another fantastic series. I can’t wait to read the next one. This author has quickly become a favorite of mine, her world building skills are yet again on point.

Solid concept that needs some polishing.

I should not have liked this as much as I did because in my intellectual brain wrinkles I completely recognize there are a lot of issues with this book - it's messy, the main character is a huge Mary Sue, plot wise it's all over the place and though the world building is great, the author really just throws you in and it's hard to figure out who everyone really is because there's about five million terms for everything and nothing's explained unless you read the glossary.

But! (You knew it was coming)

As a summer beach read I'll be damned if it didn't hit the spot. It was light and fluffy and talked about hot boys and beautiful clothes and a damsel in distress who is lusted after by all the hot guys in the vicinity PLUS she kicks major ass and wields a cool fire sword. So light, fluffy fun. Like eating cotton candy, bad for your teeth and not really all that filling but it tastes good while going down so I'm not going to think too much about it, I'm just gonna go with the flow.

This book was objectively bad. The world-building was a cross between The Hunger Games and Divergent, which wasn’t itself the problem, but the nouns and proper nouns given to objects, people, and places didn’t make any logical sense and weren’t used with enough frequency to help decipher their meanings (though I didn’t finally find the glossary at the end, I’m still mad about it).

This book was also all action and no plot. A bunch of things happened during the course of the story, but I still have no idea what this books overall plot arc is supposed to be.

All of the characters suck. And their interactions suck. I don’t understand any of the characters: their thoughts, feelings, motivations are still all a mystery to me.

The writing. It’s not good. I found myself cringing constantly.

I’m invested enough to give it two stars and go find the spoilers for books 2 and 3 so I can be done reading this series.

Really good book. Can’t wait to read more.

Your destiny is determined by your birth order! Secordborns are breed to serve the Firstborns. Would you be happy with your birth order? Oh and Thirdborn or more are killed for just existing.

Your fate is determined by where you are born. Firstborns inheriting everything while secondborns transition into their service role, losing their identity and taking the name of their fate.

Roselle is a Secondborn that has lived her entire life in the spot light. But she poses a risk to her Firsrborn brother and her mother, The Swords, legacy. She must go, but it can’t seem like her mother wants her dead. She is shipped off to serve on the front line of the war. Can she service more than a month?

Cool world development. Strong young woman with growing up to do
