The Joke

Milan Kundera

3.89 AVERAGE

“I was not a hypocrite, with one real face and several false ones. I had several faces because I was young and didn't know who I was or wanted to be.”

Milan Kundera's first novel is a satirical account of the Communist regime and its totalitarianism, eventually leading to his blacklisting and his works being banned in Czechoslovakia. The central theme of the plot being jokes, and how each of the central characters find their lives transformed by life's elaborate prank. There are four central characters, each of whose first-person perspectives unfold systematically as the plot unfolds. Some of the underlying themes are blacklisting, cultural conservatism, religion and life in imprisonment.

Someone getting in trouble for telling a joke or for laughing at the wrong time was an idea I once had for a novel. I obviously had no idea that Milan Kundera had written a book with a very similar premise, and I lack the imagination necessary to come up with such a story.
Imagine my amazement when I read this book for the first time without knowing anything about it beforehand and learn that one of the greatest authors of all time and I once had the same notion.
Surreal!
I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter and element of this book.
While I was reading it, I kept wondering how The Unbearable Lightness of Being came to be his most well-known piece. This is it for me ! The joke is his magnum opus.
The chance that Milan Kundera will pass away before receiving the Nobel Prize he unquestionably deserves is growing increasingly likely as he ages, and I find this to be incredibly sad.
New favourite and very highly recommended .

This is just Murakami but more boring

ضعت في البداية "فهّيت" حيث لم أستوعب أن الأحداث كان يرويها الجميع.
استمتعتُ أكثر في الفصول الأولى والوسطى.

This is Kundera's debut novel and the third book of his that I have read in a pretty short amount of time (I only discovered him a couple of months ago and fell in love), also my least favourite by far although it was still very good but I didn't think it was as poetic or as deep as 'Immortality' (my favourite and the second one I have read) and 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' (the first one, took me some time to get into at the beginning, maybe because I hadn't been used to him yet or didn't know how to approach his books, also the only one I read the English translation of but I think I actually prefer German).

The book mostly talks about communism, political identity and revenge, usually not my favourite topics but I think Kundera has a gift to make every topic interesting!

I think you can tell it's his first book cause it's the most "ordinary" and he doesn't experiment as much with different settings, unusual arcs of suspense and the like.

El primer Kundera que leí y me enganchó absolutamente.
De ahí en adelante...
