Hmm I wanted to like this more... I straight up had to skip part of the beginning of the book where Kiran, the "hero," humiliates Maeva for being in love with him. Nine years in the future, Kiran collects Maeva to be his horde's healer and his wife. I did like the explanation of why he left her, but gosh the toxic masculinity embedded in this world made it hard to read tbh. Why do horde kings need to be brutally whipped to prove they can lead?! Anyway, if you like childhood friends to lovers and second chance romances, maybe pick this one up. Just wasn't for me.

Maeva was a human who grew up in a dakkari settlement because a dakkari couple brought her home with them when she was just a baby abandoned in the woods. She grew close with Kiran, the son of the settlement leader, and offered her heart to him right before he was going to lead his own horde as a new vorakkar. He broke her heart and left without saying goodbye. Later on her admitted that he was simply not ready to take a wife because of his doubts about being a vorakkar and had tried to say goodbye but was prevented by Maeva's father. Maeva moved on and forgave him for breaking her heart but when her mother died, she sent word to ask him to come back for the burial, she received news from his mom that he wouldn't come. Maeva's mom was super close with Kiran too so Maeva felt that Kiran changed and didn't care about her family anymore, and that's the one thing she couldn't forgive him for. She buried her love for him and closed off her emotions to the world.

One day, he came back because he had a dream about Maeva and something told him in his gut to settle his horde near the settlement. Creatures from the east were starting to flee south and one of Kiran's soldiers got injured from it. Maeva was a healer and she was nearby, which led to her meeting him again in nine years. Kiran also came back because he wanted to bring Maeva on as a mokkira, head healer, for his horde. Since she wasn't able to secure "mokkira" position in her settlement, she decided to go to Kiran's horde just for the winter.

There, they learned that Kiran didn't know about Maeva's mother's passing and that his mom had lied to Maeva because at that time, Kiran's horde was going through hardships. His mom knew that Kiran would leave and cause the demise of his horde. I think all the lonely angst and Maeva's reluctance to even try opening herself up to him again is completely believable because of the set up. It's typically very annoying when fmc would keep denying when it's clear that there's nothing holding them back, just something to lengthen the pages. The hurt Maeva felt (and also the second-hand embarrassment I felt for her) made me understand why she was holding back so much.

What I didn't like was how they settled the conflict with Kiran's mom. The book told us that Maeva had been close to his mom too when someday she just seemingly cut her off. When Kiran finally confronted his mom about the lie, we never got closure with the mom--she just turned her back on Maeva and walked off. Considering the history they had, I was hoping for a more complex resolution.

Eventually, Maeva let Kiran back in her heart and they chose to live in the horde, with her whole family coming along.

Anyways, for the overarching plot: there was this red mist that started from the Dead Mountain and that's what's causing the creatures to flee. Then the book also mentioned the first human-dakkari hybrid female born years ago.

Overall, loved the angst, loved the couple's chemistry. I wished there more scenes from their childhood so it could be more fleshed out though.
