I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I am not a big fan of period novels, but the mysterious feeling that this book gives off, as well as Ivy herself, drew me in. Throughout the book I couldn't put it down, I had some misgivings, but I want to know more about Mr. Markham and his history with his prior wives and how Ivy falls into his life. This book does end with a cliffhanger of sorts, needing the next book to find out what happens next, whether violets death was murder or if Ivy and Markham will marry. I will be buying the second book; I was entranced.

This Kindle Unlimited membership will be the death of me. Didn't enjoy the instalove, wish they had spent more time getting to know each other before the pining started. But a sexy Mr. Rochester stand-in with a mystery straight out of a DuMaurier novel? Yes please. Sierra Simone clearly has the same book crushes as I do.

This book definitely is short and ended abruptly on a cliffhanger. Ivy and Julian are perfectly paired and I love the mystery behind the two deaths of his past wives. My guess is that Mrs. Brightmore has something to do with it but there are a few other characters who are intertwined into the story. With that aside it is clear Julian Markham is a man who does want love and that may be the very thing that endangers ivy.

Sadly, this book just wasn't for me...The writing was great, but some aspects of the story I couldn't deal with and I tried, but it simply didn't work.

Bad retelling of Jane Eyre where the characters just have sex all the time.

Hello Sierra Simone, how I've missed you!
I loved everything about this novel, except for the fact that it was barely 150 pages long!

The MC is obligated to move to Markham Hall, guest of her late cousin's husband, Mr. Markham, after her brother's death. She is strong and curious and doesn't like to be bossed around.
The love interest is mysterious, "morally gray" one could say, but I have a feeling he's just a sweetheart with armour to shield his beaten-up heart.

Notable mention: there is a particular scene in which Julian and Ivy have a steamy encounter in a small temple to escape the heavy rain and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT, it gave me such Pride & Prejudice's "Will you marry me" and Bridgerton's "Wildest Dreams" vibes.
