Wow. Just wow. I wasn't expecting to like this story as much as I did but gosh darn golly - I did. I very much appreciate when authors write about long-term relationships. They're not all shiny and new. Maybe it's a middle age thing - I just like reading about characters that aren't 24 ;).

Rhett and Ethan have grown apart over the last ten years are separating. Unfortunately circumstances mean they must continue to share the house they own and take in a roommate to speed up the house repayments. The sooner they can gain more equity in the house, the sooner they can sell and get on with their lives.

Despite Ethan's declaration that he couldn't stand the sight of Ethan, and both of them agreeing that the sooner they were able to get out of each's way the better, it is obvious there is something unresolved.

An interesting scenario develops with new housemate Kieran. Both Ethan and Rhett become involved with the man, first separately but then together. And through this, Ethan and Rhett discover new found passion for each other. But although he can't deny the attraction to Ethan and how well they work together in bed (and the sex IS hot and passionate!), Rhett realises that 'ex-sex' may not be the answer....
"That brief taste of something good made the cold colder, the quiet quieter, and the bitterness bitterer. And I couldn't do it anymore. I had to end this arrangement with Ethan. No matter how hot it was, it couldn't go on because I couldn't stand the cold."

In many ways Kieran becomes the trigger that leads the men to finally starting to communicate. They start to understand why their relationship started to fail and exposed their true feelings towards one another.
Spoiler"I never stopped loving you."
I smiled and kissed him again, then whispered, "I never stopped loving you, either." I thought I had. there were times I thought I hated him.
Never in my life had I been so glad to be wrong."

Some of the story puzzled me. There was emotional fall-out from one of the sexual encounters between the three men ("It was a mistake because it happened for all the wrong reasons"). Kieran seemed to be the one getting the raw deal. I couldn't fully understand why Kieran would be receptive to the offer to participate again or why Rhett and Ethan would want to continue involving Kieran. "This is probably one of the most unorthodox solutions to one of the most unorthodox situations I've ever heard of."

What I really wanted was for Kieran to also find happiness and not be the outsider. So this is what I am hoping for in book 2 [b:The Closer You Get|12324689|The Closer You Get (Distance Between Us, #2)|L.A. Witt|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327893398s/12324689.jpg|17303176].

Good book. It really illustrates what can happen when miscommunication happens in a relationship and you don't speak up.

After being in a relationship for a decade, Ethan and Rhett are over. But there's a slight complication: they can't sell the house they purchased together until they pay down the mortgage a bit. So they're stuck living together even though they're no longer involved. But to speed up the process of paying the mortgage, they agree to rent out a room, and they're surprised (and feel quite lucky) to get someone like Kieran as the renter. Kieran is a bartender at one of the hottest bars in town, and it isn't long before both Ethan and Rhett move in. Neither Ethan nor Rhett can fault the other, and Kieran doesn't seem bothered to be spending time with each of them. And then Ethan announces that he's interviewing for a job back home in Toronto, and the delicate balance that has built in the house just might topple over.

This was definitely a unique story--I don't read many where the relationship is over before the book even starts. But despite not actually seeing the breakup on the page, readers should have no trouble picking up the emotions, the angst, and the complications that exist between these two. And, thankfully, it's not exactly a predictable story, either. I found myself wanting to yell at the characters several times--especially Rhett--but they were all absolutely endearing at the same time. If you like your romance stories with a little more than the average complexity (with full knowledge that it also equates to some extra steaminess), this one is definitely for you.

This book is beyond hot, the menage scenes are amazing, but even more than the sex, this book is about emotions.

The pain and hurt, the past memories, the longing, are all tied together so tightly that you can physically feel the pull when all this threads start unravelling.

There's so much more than just the physical in this narrative. It's an out two men who'd forgotten how to communicate finding their voices again through a most unorthodox method.

Each one has moments where they're on the edge, but the only voice we clearly hear the inner thoughts of is that of Rhett. But that doesn't mean the reader is left blind at how both Ethan and Kieran feel.

The plot is skilfully woven to allow all their emotions to surface and its all carefully pulled back together with a HEA which is as much deserved as it is hard won.

This is another retro release from Lori and I loved it.

First Read in mid/late 2011

I decided to revisit Rhett and Ethan before moving on to the other books in this series. And I didn't regret doing so one bit lol.

My rating remains the same. I loved the guys then and I still love them now. All the characters were interesting and of course smoking hot! And the sex scenes made my ereader's screen nearly sizzle.

I loved the dynamics in the relationships between all three of the MCs. There was a real depth there without being dragged out or overly angsty. Basically just my kind of story!

it probably deserves an extra star and a half for the writing which is pretty good, but i am just personally not a fan of stories where a long term loving relationship is flailing and they decide to rescue it by inviting in a third. I always feel that it cheapens the emotional connection they shared and it just becomes all about sex. i struggled to connect with the story.
