Do you ever wonder how an author could have an entire fantasy world tucked away in the crevices of her mind? Well, Claire Legrand has definitely created a complex magical world with demons, monsters, angels, and humans. Furyborn is the making of an intricate story where there are two queens, Rielle the Blood Queen, and Eliana the Sun Queen. Both women are connected yet their lives span over a thousand years. Furyborn tells the story of both of them in alternating chapters as they learn of their powers, past, and their potential to save and destroy the people they love. I liked how the chapters are short and full of action and adventure causing me to move quickly through the 500 page book. Of course the ending hints to more of these two captivating woman to come, and I am definitely looking forward to reading them.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD
I really wanted to love this book!
I read it fast. It's quick-paced, a lot of action and good cliffhangers at the end of each chapter. The angels are fascinating and scary. I want to know more about them!
BUTTTT
The first chapter gives away what happens to a major character!!!! Why? I don't understand this. Why would you do this to me. Not only that, it arguably gives away the end of one of the major characters in the series. Unless, of course, that sweet time travel changes things. Which it might.
That was enough to put this at three stars when I would have given it four.
Then, the romantic relationships were so vapid. Yes, Rielle knew Audric (whose name I had to look up just now because I cared about him so little) her whole life. She told us that, but we didn't SEE any of it. I had no reason to understand why they were so in love with each other. I wanted to actually SEE A RELATIONSHIP GROW. Instead, we got two sex scenes that were pretty explicit for a YA novel. I don't know why this book wasn't classified as "new adult" because both main characters are 18 (if I do the math in my head right, which I think I did) and Eliana has a job! So this didn't need to be a YA. Simon/Eliana isn't really any better, cause it's pretty clear Simon just worships her and Harkan died (we think???) early on. But I cared more about Harkan/Eliana than Audric/Rielle, and Harkan was only in the first 100 pages of the book. That put it at two stars.
I did enjoy the world and the story was interesting, but those two things put a damper on this book for me. So, if it seems like these two things wouldn't bother you, you should read it!

I just couldn't NOT follow it. I was so bored and my mind wouldn't stick with it.
Simon knocked a star off, the rest was okay but dragged a bit. Simon though… why?! The way he only spoke to Eliana through flirtation was sooo awkward when you know he was there when she was born. So much cringe.
Started. And stopped and started again. Concept is good. Characters were interesting by the end but I could track the character switches early on and kept finding myself closing the book each time it switched roles. Won’t read the sequels

This is a split-perspective book. One story feels well rounded with good pacing. The other feels like the characters make no growth, just sharp changes to personality, and the story is so lacking.
I can’t handle this book right now. I don’t know if it’s the political climate or what but it’s definitely not helping and it seems unnecessarily violent.
I find the two perspectives maddening. As soon as I get into one story I’m ripped away and placed in a completely different one only to be swapped back. It makes it very difficult to follow the many threads of this story ans keep any details straight.
I liked plot and I might come back to this later in a different headspace but I’m shelving it for now.

With the amount of pages in this book I am disappointed by the world building and the author’s ability to describe action sequences. It was both too long and not enough? Very odd.
Love the concept so I will continue to read the series, hopefully the other 2 books improve from a craft standpoint.
