Thought provoking and complex, the three novels in this trilogy bounded together read more like philosophy cases than story-led science fiction. Rich ideas are more than capable of making up for characters or settings, as each character and setting ended up becoming conduits for ideas, symbols for the muses Asimov needed to put down on paper. This is usually how most stories are written, but Asimov's style and prose makes it even more evident.
My favorite arc from the series was The Mule, as the conflict he introduced really spiced things up for this galaxy. He's a literal mutant.
Then we have Arcadia, my next favorite/interesting character, and one who sticks out by a ton because she's an actual character. She fits in well enough with the rest of the story, though many a times she came out feeling like a companion from Doctor Who. Maybe this is where that idea came from! She seriously carries a lot of those quality, specially for 1949!
That was quite the journey and after 6 months I finally finished The Foundation Trilogy!!

Proudly epic in scale, and a classic if you're after a grand sweep of history kind of feel. The feeling you get of empires rising and falling as individuals offer futile resistance against the tides of history is really satisfying and you can build the world as much as you like (Asimov doesn't describe much!). And it gets you thinking, as there's a clear theory throughout the book: individuals have a marginal impact on history at best. It's economic and sociological forces which drive the change.
In terms of how it's written, to be honest there are parts that are a bit of a slog to get through and the characters aren't really well developed (but that fits in with the grand historical theme I suppose). Even so, it's still mostly decently paced and makes time for some intrigue. The Second Foundation especially has loads of bluffs and double and triple bluffs in the last 100 pages or so!

My favorite work of sci-fi. I believe someone, somewhere once referred to Asimov as the grandfather of Sci-Fi, and man oh man I think they nailed it. The world building, the character development, and the adherence to "natural science" kept me locked in and wanting more with every page I turned. If you are a fan of sci-fi and think you've read "the best", drop everything and pick up the first Foundation book now and get back to me once you've finished the third shortly thereafter!

Some of the most audacious ideas ever conceived . Wonder how much of it could come to pass . An extraordinary world building novel !!!

As rich, full, and creative as Asimov’s vision of a far future time genuinely is, it takes nothing away from his great mind if a reader is amused by the things he didn’t imagine. And so the great capital planet of Trantor prints tens of millions of extra newspapers on an eventful day, a roomful of people put their wristwatches to their ears to see if they are still ticking, and a student composes her assignment by dictating to a typewriter which renders her speech in perfect handwriting on purple paper with peach margin lines. We’ll soon be coming up on 75 years since first publication, and it’s still a great story.
