Hollow City

I had forgotten I'd preordered this when it suddenly showed up on my doorstep. I was excited to continue the adventure of Jakob and the Peculiar Children. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though I think I still prefer the first one. There appear to be more books coming, which I will definitely read.

In this book, you begin to learn more about the Peculiar World outside the Cairnholm loop. Fascinating people, daring escapes, and short-lived triumphs. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the first book.

Entertaining enough to keep my interest. Think the added photos are a nice touch. Will probably read the third book just to complete the series.

I had not read the first book so I was a little confused by some of the jargon. But it's quite easy to figure out.

It seems like a good young adult book with lots of adventure but the characters are not as well drawn as I'd like. They have their peculiarities but there is no real interiority.

I really thought that this book was going to be different. I imagine some sort of orphanage of children with gifts (something perhaps like telepathy) but it turns out the characters are much more weird. I was hoping for something almost realistic or magical realistic but this is really a fantasy novel. So far this is little exploration of character. It is one "how do they get out of this" plot after another.

Jacob, who is the main protagonist and whose pov we inhabit,  sounds like a 40 year old man. He is not believeable. Even the phone call with his father does not feel as touching as it should

However, for those who like adventure, there really isn't a dull moment. The reader gets quickly dragged from one unlikely-to-survive situation to the next.

I will not be reading the other books in this series

Writing like as always is excellent. The plot is well paced and plot twists were handled very well. However, I figure out why I am not fully in love with this series. I cannot stand these characters for the most part. I just want to strangle them for a majority of the time. I cannot stand the relationship between Emma and Jacob. How the hell is this okay because Jacob is basically dating an 80+ year old woman who is his grandfather's ex. That is just beyond creepy and disgusting.

Overall I enjoyed this read, but man I swear I need an advil.

Great work.

2.5-3 Stars. This is a decent followup, although I think it fails at being quite as atmospheric and whimsical as the first book. Still, Riggs’ prose is excellent and his characters are wonderful. Solid middle-grade fiction that holds up well against my memories of it.

Part two of the peculiar children story, and it was one long chase. The charm of the first book wore off for me in the first couple chapters. The use of the pictures seemed forced, like the author had these creepy pictures and then he composed a story around them, but were it not for the pictures he might have been able to write a better story. The tale was a little boring. Do I want to read part three? probably not. I'll just flip through the book to see the pictures but not actually read it because it seems like the chase will continue. zzzzzzzz.....

this series was so unmemorable like i cannot tell you a single thing about this book besides that the home is in wales

I found it much slower than the first book. There's constant brawling and fighting but nothing is really moving forward. Overall it left the impression of merely a gap-filler between the opening and finale. A lot of cool new characters, though. Wish we saw at least some of them in the movie.

Definitely not as good as Miss Peregrine's etc.; Hollow City was harder to get into and seemed to drag in ways I didn't experience with the first book. All that said, I'm eager to see what happens in the 3rd book!
