Humm. A little too dark for me. Hoping the next one is better.

This book was very hard to finish for me and I don’t know why. I think I was just lazy. The beginning is very slow and the pacing only picks up near the end. There are a couple of things I didn’t like. For example, a lot of this story is just Jacob and the gang traveling through London trying to find Miss Wren. It didn’t interest me. There’s also Ransom Riggs’ style of writing. For the most part, I like it, but I could do without the long paragraphs of exposition after exposition (sometimes it’s Jacob’s introspection, though). It made the story hard to read. I wished those paragraphs were broken up by dialogue more.

One thing I find interesting is the fact that this book is in first person be feels like it should’ve been in third person. Jacob continually has insight on the thoughts and feelings of other characters that he shouldn’t have. Namely, with Emma, but there’s a scene with his dad near the end of the novel where his dad has called his 177 times and Jacob explains why in a way he couldn’t have known. It feels awkward to me and makes me think that the book should’ve been written in third person omniscient instead.

I would like to clarify: I do like the book. Even though I think the first book was better, I did enjoy reading this book and look forward to reading the next.

(Audio) This was okay. Unfortunately, I think Jacob is probably my least favorite character lol

I love this series; and after finishing this this one, I anxiously await the third installment.

This book has the same time and style as the first, but the story is much more an adventure. The first was about discovery and introduction, this one is much more plot driven. And both are a success.

I love the use of the historical pictures as illustration in the story. They are perfectly peculiar and fit wonderfully.

I liked it but it was definitely not as good as the first. Some of the narrative appeared to be there just to fit a picture and several of the pictures didn't match the narrative. They were in the English countryside and the picture of the dilapidated house was distinctly American. There are no wooden houses in England, the place was pretty much deforested by the 1500s I believe. Post and beam they have but not clapboard and shutters. Correct me if I'm wrong. It was worth the read and quite compelling but the story might have flowed better without the interjection of some of the background images that served to distract rather than add.

Good read. Took a while but enjoyed the story. Will move on to the third to complete the series.
