One star because this ending makes no sense. I'm all for "open endings" leaving some details to the reader's imagination. Yet, this book has too much left unanswered. Feels like I'm missing a funnel chapter. Disappointing!
How would you feel if you came home from a trip and found out that other people are living in your house? Not renting, but actually bought your home and it is now their home.
And, this has been your home for the last 10 years with your sons and husband, who you are currently estranged from.
So, what would you do?
Well, in this case, Fi, our main protagonist, who is facing this situation is in shock. So, real estate agents, lawyers and police are summoned.
And what Fi discovers is that her husband, Bram, who she has been separated from, has sold the house from under her, to this couple. Of course, Fi’s signature is forged, but the deal is done.
Now what?
This becomes the art of the author. She creates a novel that takes the time to explain how this situation occurred. (No spoilers from me.)
The author shares in an interview that this “literary thriller” was inspired by a case of property fraud she read about in a London newspaper.
So, did the story work?
The story tackles betrayal, guilt and relationships that go wrong. For those who like domestic thrillers, this may be a binge-worthy story of secrets to unravel. With an unexpected ending.
The question will be, how will readers feel when they turn that last page?
For me, I was in disbelief. I felt frustration and shock. And perhaps that was brilliant on the author’s part to make me so vested in the story, to have these feelings. And thankfully, it wasn’t a cliffhanger. If it were, you would hear about it from me!

I was excited to read this book from the time I first clapped eyes on it, and so my expectations were admittedly high. I truly think this could have been a four star read for me had it been shorter. There were a lot of repetitive scenes and elements that, if cut , or trimmed at least, could have made for a much tighter, tenser atmosphere. I thought the premise was very interesting and the characters well developed, but it just lost me when the plot started to get repetitive and way too descriptive for a book billed as a mystery/thriller. It wasn't bad, and Candlish can definitely write, but it was just too slow for what I was expecting.

Thrilling right until the very last line! Gosh I enjoyed this book!
Thanks to Penguin's First To Read for an early copy. I thought this book was fantastic. It had me at the edge of my seat to find out how everything came together. A lot of the twists were kinda predictable but that didn't take away from the story. The end was a smidge of a letdown only because it didn't end as a wrapped box, perfectly done. I'm still wondering where the characters stand. Very enjoyable read.
I will admit it had a slow build, but that last twist in the end was crazy when it all came together.
I really wanted to like this book. It starts off with promise, Fiona (Fi) and Bram are married and things are not good. He's cheated, he's lied and there are strangers moving into their house.
Unfortunately, the story is repetitive (2 points of view rehashing the same information) and as a result this book is way too long. I also disliked both the main characters. Bram for being a terrible person and Fi for being the wife who has no idea who her husband is and keeps getting played like a fiddle. I just wanted her to wake up and get a clue.
I found myself skimming most of Bram's sections just to get through. I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and the publisher in return for my honest review. Had I bought this one myself, or borrowed it from the library, I'm confident I wouldn't have finished it.

I wanted to love it. And while the premise was believable and enjoyable I felt it would have benefited from some editing. It simply ran on too long and easily could have shed 50 pages. AND I will certainly pick up this writer’s next book.
Too long, too boring, too many awful characters. People need to stop marketing books as thrillers when literally nothing happens.
