An interesting story but it just drags on and on and on.
If you like smart mysteries, don’t wait to read this one. You get at least two mysteries in one in this whodunit within a whodunit. Extremely clever and self-referential. And, best of all, I couldn’t solve the mysteries, so the reveals were very satisfying!

The story within the story (Pünd’s story) was way more intriguing than the one taking place outside of it. For that reason, I wish this book wasn’t split 50/50. However, it was clever enough that I am still happy with the way it all tied together.
IMO, this book was uneven. And sometimes, Horowitz is too clever by half. I like wordplay and a bit of tongue in cheek in an author, but this was too much of a good thing. I can't say I liked his main protagonist, and by the time he got back to the original story (there's a story buried in a story), I had forgotten the main plot points. That may be me, I was reading it off and on, but it shouldn't be difficult to retain details about plot, should it?
I will try another book by him before I move on.

What a ride! With the first few sentences of this book, I was absolutely entrapped! Thoroughly enjoyed the first half, at that point I was honestly thinking this is one of the best things that I have ever read! And then we jump to the present day timeline, and while I continued to enjoy it, and I do think it was incredibly well written. I just wasn’t as swept up as with the first part of the story.
I honestly wish we could’ve just stayed in small town, England!! For me, I didn’t need the story within a story.
While I did end up giving this book 5 stars, in my rating system It’s an incredibly low five stars. My main two problems with it, other than the time jump, is it felt preachy at times and what on earth was that ending?!??
All that being said, I loved the story!
Finally it was the few, short sentences sprinkled throughout that captures how it feels to set down and read a good “whodunnit” book that ultimately places this story so close to my heart.
PS: the audiobook is incredible

It's a book within a book...this confused me at first, but once that became clear I devoured this book. It reminds me of old Agatha Christie crime novels.
