I read The Summer House by Jenny Hale last month when I vacationed in the Outer Banks! It was obviously the perfect setting because this book also takes place in the Outer Banks in a small town called Waves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is the second book I’ve read by Jenny Hale and I love how thoughtful and sweet her romances are. This one in particular follows Callie as she and her best friend pour their life savings into renovating a beach house they’ve admired since their childhood. Callie thinks she’s too busy to worry about her love life but enter Luke Sullivan. Luke is dubbed a playboy but Callie soon realizes there’s a lot more to Luke than meets the eye. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This was such a sweet, multi-layered story. It was light and breezy and the perfect summer beach read. I love stories that also focus on friendships and this story didn’t disappoint as we also focus on Callie and Olivia’s friendship as well! Definitely can’t wait to read more from Jenny Hale! ⠀⠀
lighthearted slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Secrets and scandals among a wealthy family in the Outer Banks was everything I didn’t know I needed. Callie and Luke’s love story weathered some big storms, literally and figuratively, but they made it out stronger in the end. This was such a fun, feel good book.

DID NOT FINISH

2.5. DNF @ 30%. La-la-la. Life is too short to read books that are poorly written and I don't care to finish. Truly though, it's just NOT good. The writing was stilted, the chapters ended weirdly/abruptly, and the dialogue was very meh and boring.

I have reached a new stage in my reading life and that is giving myself permission to DNF more. In this case, it's for a book club and I'll just hear how it wraps up from them.

Callie and Olivia, longtime friends who share a sisterly bond, decide to purchase a house to renovate into a bed and breakfast in North Carolina's Outer Banks. When Callie meets misunderstood millionaire Luke Sullivan, she gets a bit distracted from the DIY projects at hand and becomes focused on her growing romantic connection to the local celebrity. A background mystery story line involving a diary ties the ending together with a neat bow.

Thoughts: This book contains just about everything I love in a light summer read (beach! bed and breakfast! best friends! hot guy! romance!), but I never felt compelled to pick it up when I wasn't reading it. I wish I could pinpoint where the book missed the mark for me, but it is more a general feeling about the book's entirety. I feel many readers will enjoy this one, but for me it was just okay.

Callie and her best friend Olivia have finally purchased the beach house she admired all throughout her childhood. They're going to open it as a bed and breakfast.

So, Callie has been too busy to think about her love life. So meeting Luke Sullivan catches her off guard. And the more time she spends with him the more see she's that he's more than the stories that the press publish about him.

Callie and Olivia have been best friends since they were kids. When the Beachcomber Inn goes up for sale across from Olivia's grandmother, they jump at the chance to purchase. Both put all their sweat & tears into opening the Inn before the end of summer. But when Callie runs into a famous local, Luke Sullivan, she's swept up right away. Can Luke & Callie trust each other and begin a relationship? Will they open the Inn on time?

This was a cute summer read. I enjoyed the little history with the Inn as well.
