reminds me of something

I recognized a few things. Maybe I read this before? But anyway, it’s written really well. It’s not a strict retelling of Greek/Roman mythology which really opens up options for the storyline. I’m curious where this goes next

Like a bad ACOTAR spin off. Mom telling daughter to “take care of your older siblings”. Boo! I hate this trope. Also dying in childbirth after being SA’d pretty much immediately - it’s gross and SA is extremely overused.

Overview of my thoughts: I so badly wanted to love this book but between the slow (and I mean *really* slow) plot and the dull characters...I ended up feeling like finishing this book was more of a chore than an actual, "I really want to read this book."

Plot: THE PLOT WAS SO DEAD-

The amount of brain cells I think got killed off just for me to get through the book was a lot. While I'm not saying I hated the plot--I think it had a very good concept--I think it was just too drawn out. It was very slow-moving, which seems to be a common theme in the YA Greek mythology books I've read.

But, I will say, I loved the last 20%. That's where all of the action happened, where all of the good parts came. Honestly, 5/5 star ending-

Characters: Dull characters. Yes, Althea had such good character growth, but she felt too...unrealistic most of the time. Her motives were very obvious and good on her for sticking to them, but at the same time, I know I wouldn't do half the stuff she did. She's a strong character but lacked the traits to make the reader like her.

Theo was...mid. Very much gave off Tobias from Divergent.

My favorite character had to be Bronte, honestly, I loved her :)

Romance: It's like a love-triangle but no one wants to admit it's a love triangle. Althea has chemistry with both Theo AND Zeus, but if we're to follow the original mythology, she should end up with Zeus in the next book. But Zeus is engaged to someone else??

IDK, ask me next book how I feel about it-

Age Rating: 14-15+

Overall: I'm gonna give the second book a chance, but if I end up not liking that one either, probably never going to ever want to think about this book again 👍

As someone who studied Classic briefly in school, I had high hopes for this.  The idea of reading a story based between Cronus overthrowing his father and Cronus being overthrown by his own son sounded really appealing, especially from the perspective of a women (because lets face it in that era, women were not considered important enough to even be a side note let alone a protagonist).   Unfortunately it was not as good as I expected.  The story was ok and the plot moved alone fine but I felt that the writing was not quite description enough.  I also was really engaged for the first half, then the plot sped up so much that I needed to constantly go back to make sure I hadn't missed anything, only to realise that plot holes were opening up all over the place.  The final act was rushed and I know its a battle but one second Althea is fighting in a throne room, then she suddenly has a star in her had within 2 paragraphs?  I need more description and a sense of realism for that and yes I know its fantasy/mythology but it completely took me out of the story trying to figure it out.  I did like Althea's sense of duty and responsibility to her family but not sure about her as it felt a bit underdeveloped.  Also the women on Crete were very one dimensional, which I would have expected to be more rounded considering how about 50% of the book is based there.  Overall it was an ok read and I will read the sequel, if only because I want to see where things go from here.

The first book of Wings of Fury by Emily R. King is a different, surprising, and strange version of a romantic mythology story of Cronus's reign.

A retelling mythology story of the time that Gods have less power and women are warriors and fight for their freedom. What should I call the Lambros sisters? Revolutionary maybe?!

"As long as men still think we're their possessions to buy and sell and trade, we will never be safe."

Cleora, Bronte, and Althea are the three daughters of Stavra and Tassos. After their parents died, try to escape and made a better new life for themself, on the island of Crete, where the God Boy was hidden.
Althea's destiny is to guide and protect her older sisters. The oracles direct Althea to her fate for finding Zeus and defeat the God of God's, Cronus (who has swallowed his children), which is responsible for Stavra's death.

I love this book. There are lots of adventures, twists, and well-drawn characters. An unexpected story, fast-paced, and hard to put it down. I'm looking forward to the second book.

Many thanks to 47North and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read Wings of Fury by Emily R. King in exchange for an honest review.

Decided to DNF, this is such a heavy read imo, and I just cannot put myself through all this sadness. I need some cute, lighthearted, funny romance in my life instead...
