This was a good book but I felt like I didn't learn to much or anything new about how Hitler rose to power. Though I know this book was focused on the Dodd family, I thought Larson would give readers a little bit more of Hitlet but thier really wasn't. He also only focused on Dodd and his daughter Martha, just mentioning the wife and son barely throughout which was a dissapointment because I'm sure thier story was just an interesting and compelling as the Dodd and his daughter. Overall I did enjoy the book and it was hard to put down.
I have a bad track record picking titles for my book club. I failed once again with this book. Too long, too many characters and way too many details for Chardonnay fueled casual conversation. That said, it’s still an amazing book that should be required reading for every member of humanity. There’s a reason bad things happen. And this non-fiction book tells you the how and why about one of the worst.

Interesting, but too much of the social ins and outs for my taste. I don't personally care who to he daughter of the American ambassador dated.
I'm not going to compare Trump to Hitler, but the similarities between the *people* watching fascism rise are definitely there. People want things to be okay and will do some pretty impressive mental calisthenics to explain bad things away so they can just live their lives.

Here’s the thing: do I appreciate the research and thought put into this book? Yes. Do I think this was a unique and cool idea for a book? Yes. Yet also is it quite hard to get over and support main characters who are not only antisemitic but at times openly supporting the Nazi party in a book which leads up to WW2? Yes very.
This book is about an American college president who accepts the position of ambassador to Germany in the 1930s. He travels there with his wife and two adult children, a son and a daughter. It is in large part based upon the diaries of the ambassador and his daughter and supplemented with additional material that provides background. Enough time has now passed so that information from what would have been secret sources is now available. All of this gives a very complete view of events, which is good. However, the events that are being presented were gruesome. It is an enlightening but difficult read.
