I really wanted to like this book. I did read most of it, only scanning the last 15% from pure boredom. I never really figured out the purpose of the book. There was no real plot, no characters to really care about. It felt like he was writing a screenplay which would be sketched out by someone else's script. I am so grateful I was able to check out the book from my library and did not spend money on it.
Graphic. Some offshoot story lines aren't wrapped up. Abrupt ending leaves something to be desired.
I went into the book with great expectations and was thoroughly underwhelmed.
-The book started great! Hans-Peter is ambitious, daring and psychotic enough. And Cari Mora catches his eye. The tone set for the book here was dark, gritty and horrifying. But after their initial interactions, those two don't meet at all! There isn't any chance to build fear in Cari about Hans. His incinerator had no role here. Or his house in general. His death too was not satisfying. By the end, Hans-Peter was nothing more than a human trafficker who died a basic death.
-Though her name IS the title, Cari Mora was hardly in the book. Her back story was flushed out very well, but in the present day, she hardly had any role. The book seemed to revolve more around Don Ernesto and Hans-Peter.
-There were two stories developing side by side: first, the treasure and second Hans-Peter's plan for Cari. But the second one was not developed well, and wasn't given time to build itself too.
-Side characters: The initial crew that got killed off had not much impact on the overall storyline. Neither did the crew that came with Candy. They were severely under utilised.
Overall, the plot was great and so much could have been done with it. This is the first Thomas Harris book I've read(I've watched the movies though) and this wasn't what I expected

This book was severely underwhelming. The setup is kinda silly, a huge safe full of gold left by Pablo Escobar in Miami but it could work if the author was willing to put up a bit more development and better characters.
The protagonist, Cari Mora, is completely uninterested in the main plot, she just wants to be left alone and well, survive. But that's not interesting, she spends like 90% of the book just vaguely dodging the plot which, sure, is the logical thing to do, but it makes for a boring story.
The villain is too much:sociopath, rapist, cannibal, human trafficker, impersonator, torturer, completely bald . All of these traits are just thrown together into the character which is never properly developed. He's evil, he's dangerous and he... wants to sell Cari?
There's a bunch of other characters and a secret society of thieves too, which don't really do all that much. All in all, this book is a mess. I can see the vague makings of a good story hidden here, but they never amount to much. Would not recommend, really.

Nie wiem czemu to ma tak słabe oceny. Może zbyt wiele osób to porównuje do innych książek autora.
Ja uważam, że to dobra książka.
Rzadko sięgam po tytuły w podobnych klimatach - mafii, spisku. Lecz tutaj mnie to zaciekawiło. Najlepsze w tym wszystkim jest to, że to jest praktycznie sensacja. A je mocno lubię. Wszystko też jest przyjemnie napisane.
Ostatecznie ja polecam tę książkę.

I could not move past the writing in this book. Some of the lines just gave me such an ick I couldn’t keep reading.
I almost DNFd at Chapter 5. Pushed to Chapter 14 to see if the story would make it worth it, and didn’t find the interest of the story worth reading for.
“No Velcro to rasp if he decided to take off his clothes in the house while he looked at Cari Mora asleep”
“He could creep it with the girl Cari Mora asleep in her hotness upstairs”
“He was entitled to some fun. Maybe he could just drip a little on the bedclothes, on her scarred arms, nothing more. Oh, a drop or two on her sleeping cheek, little facial, what the hell? A little might run into the corner of her eye. Hello.”
🤢🤮
So gross.

Not as strong as Thomas Harris’s other work but still interesting!! I think the ending was rushed and could’ve been better executed.

Good quick read. Not much substance but good action and fairly interesting story
