This book may be a classic, but there were times I zoned out during the 6-hour audiobook. The touch on politics towards the end nearly saved the book, but the deus ex machina ending ruined it.

I definitely enjoyed this, I found myself wanting to know what would happen next. It's not one of the usual books I go for but I liked the concept and plot. Being used to YA style of writing I did find some parts hard to read. But I was along for the ride and found myself immersed in the world and they unveilling story. It feels like a documentary or and autobiography as you go through the events as the narrator recalls them. It's a very different reading experience but I enjoyed it a lot.

This is a fantastic novel. I am still in utter disbelief that this masterpiece was written over a century ago. This man had such a grasp for the written word and progressive storytelling that I could believe this novel was written this year. Let me put this into perspective, this novel was written in the same decade in which the Stop sign was invented. The assembly line was introduced four years after this book was released. The airplane was introduced six years after Wells had finished telling this tale. I enjoyed this novel immensely. Other than the very rare parts of the book that dragged on a bit too long, I cannot find any substantial complaints. Ill be giving this gem another read in a few years or so.

I won't pretend like there were no boring parts, or that some parts were a little convenient in terms of the storytelling, or that our main character is not much more than a walking camera with no real personality. But this book was genuinely spooky, and for the first alien invasion book it still holds up real well. The aliens are gross, and the way Wells uses them to make comments on our own behaviour as humans was exceptional. So easy to see why it's a classic.

Considering I am not a sci-fi fan…to be gifted one of the seminal works in the field as my Christmas Eve Book (as that’s a personal tradition) - was a wild card of a choice. But have to say I was gripped with the pace, and the rhythm. Despite the classic late Victorian language - which actually was a learning curve in terms of understanding other meanings for words I already knew - it was an enjoyable read. That said, I’m unsure if the description of the tripods and Martians themselves - particularly the mechanical parts - would have been easy to imagine had I not already seen two visuals iterations in TV and Film. It has definitely now got me interested in revisiting some classics in other genres….

Loved it! The writing made it really easy to imagine yourself living in the late Victorian era with the martians invading. It was particularly interesting noting the different way the information dispersed considering the lack of communication that existed compared to nowadays.
