I read the short story and found it a little confusing. I liked the idea, but the names really threw me off. I am reading Ancillary Justice and while this may take place before it, reading it before Ancillary seems to be quite confusing when it comes to the naming convention. I am only a chapter into Ancillary and only now get what is happening with the names.

Its a 0.5, but perhaps works better as a 1.5, but I won't know that until I am done with Ancillary I guess, at least it would have required a bit of setup perhaps, or maybe the tor.com short story isn't all of it?

Man, it is so hard to write good short stories, and I'm not surprised Ann Leckie has as much talent with the form as she does with the novel. This was a perfect little gem of a story, and just as punch-packing as Ancillary Justice.

(How can I wait until Provenance is published *AND* shipped to me?

It feels like forever.)

This was a beautifully written story with an amazingly crafted world and characters. I don't know why I'd kept it on my to-read list for three [!!!] years; what is wrong with me.
