Overall, I liked the pacing of the book and the switches between main characters every chapter. I also loved the witchy vibes and think this would be a great fall read for those interested in a female focused historical fiction. There are definitely heavier aspects of the book though and I would recommend checking the content warnings before picking this book up.

My only complaint is that I wanted more of the actual witchcraft that is hinted at and gradually revealed. But the succinctness of the story works well.
Potential readers, do make note of the content warnings. The heavy stuff is woven into the story in powerful ways and, in my opinion, handled beautifully. But the descriptions of certain events are graphic.

In 1619, Altha is standing trial as a witch for the murder of a local farmer who is stampeded to death by his cows. In 1942, as WWII is still going on, Violet has to keep up with societal norms whilst being essentially trapped in her father’s estate. In 2019, Kate escapes her controlling, abusive boyfriend during the night. All of them are connected not only by being Wayward but by a small cottage that is hidden away.
Their story is charged emotionally about multigenerational misogyny, but being able to overcome it with their sheer inner strength and willpower, along with their connections to nature and shared history. The three of them are incredibly resilient to what each of them had to go through, and at times I just had to put the book down because it was too much. Genuinely, Violets story was the most gripping one because, given what she had gone through, she persevered. It’s incredibly beautifully written; there are so many wonderful quotes. It’s also sad that even though they had all these things happening to them across centuries and generations, their stories were so interwoven, as if they could never escape it.

I enjoyed the 3 different POVs — differing amounts at different parts in the book. Having escaped an abusive relationship, the stuff about Simon was especially difficult for me to read. So content warning on that.
I got a little lost in the epilogue, but I also sped through it bc I’m tired of reading this dang book lol.
The themes of empowerment and solidarity between women were nice.
I can’t really say much else because I don’t remember 😅 So, sorry for this useless review lmao
