Hellboy continues to be one of the darkest, weirdest and most awesome comics I've read.

It shouldn't be a secret to anybody that I'm a huge nerd, but if you didn't already know it, here's a tell-tale sign: I've got a crush on Hellboy. The comic book character. Maybe I'm just displacing the feelings that I've got for his creator, Mike Mignola, since Hellboy is the one I've been developing a "relationship" with while reading these brilliant and beautiful books, but I'm hooked. Erudite and witty, I savor every single panel for the simplicity (and complexity) of composition. Not a single panel, line of dialogue, or plot element is wasted. Short stand-alone stories get tied into the overall arc of the HB mythology. The series is genius. I may be in love.

This is just the second Hellboy collection I've read, but I was again pleasantly surprised by how thoroughly I like it. Everything about it, really, from the myths incorporated in the story, to the distinct visual style (who knew that uniformly thin lines could be used so well in a comic book?).

The Homunculus character is so great. This whole universe is such an incredibly awesome mix of the Gothic (love the Poe!) and superhero genres. The dialogue is so on-point too.

The relief I felt that Roger didn’t die was crazy. Very rarely do I read comics where it’s unpredictable whether or not a character will die like that. Thrilling story and the breaking point of Hellboy’s relationship with the BPRD.
loved this one.

This was one full story instead of a few single shots in a trade paperback.

The story itself was interesting. I really like the art style. Lobster Johnson was... strange.

The stronger books in the Hellboy lines are the ones that focus on a singular story. And this is a solid one, building a bit off of "Almost Colossus" from The Chained Coffin, but quite a lot on both "Seeds Of Destruction" and "Wake The Devil". It's not a story that would stand on its own, and it would be a terrible place to start reading Hellboy, but as a part of the larger narrative, it's immensely satisfying, and helps set up the first run of the BPRD books.
