Sometimes a book is the same as all other fantasy books but also somehow just better, and that was this book!

There was nothing particularly revolutionary, but I really loved the characters and how they’re built out over the course of the book. There were a couple little twists that weren’t completely obvious to go with the one big one that I saw coming a mile away.

The trials, something that seems to be coming up in every fantasy book lately, were straightforward and clever without being too over the top.

The magic system is really interesting and felt unique, despite being based on elemental magic.

I have no other explanation for this other than I liked it and devoured it in a day!

Heir of Storms is Lauren Roberts-esque and was incredibly fun to read! Cleaner in language (only a few usages of curse words) though not as clean in agenda, this book was surprisingly incredible. I don't usually like the sibling trope but this one was exceptionally well done. I haven't read an "elements-abilities" book in a long time but this one lived up to my expectations.

A big con for me was that gay characters were included. :/ They're minor, and only go so much as to say "he kissed him."

Other than that, I really enjoyed reading Heir of Storms.

At my most generous, you can’t read this without knowing that the author knows her history of YA fantasy romance, and it shows (maybe too well, but that’s just my opinion.) This was nostalgic and parts of it were so reminiscent of The Hunger Games, Shatter Me, etc. that I recalled scenes in those books in a way that was sort of an unintentional walk down memory lane.

I wish we had spent more time training and building out Blaze’s powers and how they work. I wish the world had been a bit more complex and allowed for more nuance (which I think will be possible in subsequent books.) I didn’t LOVE the romance, found the twists to be obvious, and was often frustrated by Blaze’s inability to see people complexly despite the fact that Fox states very clearly that if people think she is something that she’s not, isn’t it possible that the same has been done to him??? I’ll be reading the rest of the series, of course. All around a solid, albeit flawed, debut that was super fun and fast.

Hmmmmmmm
Didn’t love the romantic subplot as it was confusing and ultimately went nowhere so was kinda just a it of a red herring.

I also feel like a lot of the premise of the trials was just THG down to the silent servants, coloured uniforms and training centre. It was kinda hunger games but make it regal and elemental.

I actually think the strongest thing about this was the idea that her birth caused a horrendous storm and she has to live with the guilt of that- the parts of the story that dealt with her emotional journey through this guilt were by far the most interesting.

I would read a sequel as I liked the FMC a lot. I think as this author writes more she could maybe come up with more unique worlds and then place her characters (which are already pretty good) in those worlds

Also there truly is something to be said for not having too many characters and not having too much going on- this book did have A LOT of characters and plot lines and I’m not sure all of them were wholly necessary.

“It’s just that people wear their hurt differently. Nobody hurts the same.”

“Heir of Storms,” by Lauryn Hamilton Murray

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the romantic tension with whom she should choose, it was my favorite part, loved the intensity. I really loved the plot and tropes with the death trials and magic system with controlling storms and stuff, so freaking good. The ending was perfect, and I can’t wait for book 2!! I think this book is perfect for readers who love fantasy with romance but with fantasy being a big part of the book.   5 out of 5 stars.

-Storm Magic
-Death Trials
-More than one romantic possibility

Thank you for the ARC, Netgalley.
