A bit harder to review since this started really slow & was hard for me to get into as a result. It was almost 40% in that the most interesting character was introduced, of course a morally grey male named Fox 🙄, and the FMC was named Blaze, but I digress.

Overall I ended up tearing through the rest of the book & it had some pretty good twists that I wasn’t expecting.

I also enjoyed the world-building & can see myself reading the next in the series when it comes out. Amazing that this is a debut from a 23 year old! 👏

*Edit to add - This book threw me into the worst reading slump! It’s easily the most underrated read this year, deserves way more hype.

I was hooked from the first line (and I need you to be too).. “For many, my birth meant death. It meant drowning in the rain I called with my first breath.” Tell me you’re not immediately curious!

My poor highlighter barely survived with the amount of annotating I did.

This is exactly the kind of YA book I crave: fast-paced,  trials, and a little mystery. I loved the emotional depth of the characters and the way the author wrote their grief.

I got a little worried when a love triangle showed up (not usually my thing), but it worked really well.

Blaze was such a relatable character, you really feel her struggles. Her fear of emotions and need to be free. Her growth was perfectly paced. It was really satisfying to watch her gain confidence and come into her power. The side characters and relationships were equally interesting, with varying levels of complexity.

The trials and magic system were unique and interesting. Some parts were a bit predictable, but honestly, it didn’t take away from the story at all. If you haven’t read this yet, you’re missing out!

This book is really fun.
Magic system: based on elements and bloodlines.
MFC: super powerful and holds a no longer around power. (Also twin with expected power. )
EarthCleaver gives some enemy to possible lover vibes.
Love interest: Meet prince 1 and later prince 2.

The narrator voice I did need to speed up a little. The beginning dragged a little with the harping on name importance. However, I think the little details were woven together nicely to work towards the twist at the end.

I don't think you'll be disappointed if you read this. Thank you Net Gallery for the audio book!

I’d like to say I’m never picking up a new release again, especially if it’s the first in a series, because what do you mean I have to wait an entire year for book 2?
Overall it was just so good I could not put it down. The only negative was how long it took to properly start, I mean it wasn’t even world-building it’s just the first 35% were slightly boring.
This book has an amazing, intricate plot and good thought through characters and the romance, if you can even call it that, is done perfectly. Although warning: slightl love triangle, but not really
