A twisty and highly readable thriller about forensic accounting, celebrity obsessions, and kickboxing. I devoured this very quickly and I think that helped paper over some places where things were withheld arguably for narrative purposes but also resulting in making it hard to always care for the central characters. The ending was quite satisfying, and I enjoyed seeing a book present a heroine in a poly relationship without it being either utopian or doomed and awful. The queer desires allowed to flourish were especially welcome. The use of people of color here is a little specious.

The book started out with an interesting premise that combined accounting with fighting, it felt like a good way to balance out the boring, even though forensic accounting does seem better than regular accounting. It alternated between Gregg, the husband of the fighter, and Nora, the accountant. The story was good, engaging, and suspenseful, I just had a hard time really liking the characters. I think some of it was intentional given how the suspense builds at the end, We are told Nora’s back story early on but don’t get a sense of how that impacted her. You are told very little of Gregg’s. It was a good read, just could have used more of that so the final fight gave me someone to root for.

Forensic accounting? Heck yes. I didn't find being an auditor working in a place attached to the skywalk to be quite so high-stakes, but Nora did have about 10 more years in the business on me so maybe it would have come ;-)
As you can tell, I loved this. I'm not sure you'll find reminiscing about the Fraud Triangle from Enron class to be quite as interesting, but the rest of it was great, too.

This book was definitely not what I would typically pick up, but it was my book club’s book. The mystery aspect of this story was very interesting and the plot was creative and believable. However, I didn’t really like nor connect with any of the characters, and I disliked the main character. The end of the book was also underwhelming and left many questions unanswered. The writing style was really interesting though!!

I've never heard of forensic accounting but turns out that is the coolest profession ever and I wish I could be that. I spent most of this book being fascinated that that sort of job exists (at least in fiction) and what the MC did in that role and trying to figure out who done it. However as the book went on things got more and more out of hand and confusing and by the end I was like "what even just happened in this book". A fast-paced thriller different from any I've read before but you might hit the end and be like wtf just happened.
TW: murder, infidelity, attempted murder, abusive relationship

Thank you to @Bibliolifestyle and Atria Books for the finished copy of Strike Me Down.
In this new thriller from Mindy Mejia, we meet Nora Trier, an expert in forensic fraud cases. She is hired by Strike Enterprises to uncover what happened to 20 million dollars that have disappeared and she only has one week to find out where the money is and who exactly took it. Nora soon finds herself in a confusing situation caught between a husband, Gregg Abbott and his wife, Logan Russo. In order to do her job, Nora must have neutrality, however, in this case, she may lack that with both Gregg and Logan. Nora recently had a one-night stand with Gregg and has been working out and attending Logan's gym classes (Logan is a famous kick-boxer and the face of Strike).
As Nora's investigation continues, new circumstances come to light about a recent Strike employee's death, one of her work partners ends up in critical condition in the hospital and Nora doesn't know who is to be trusted. Will Nora recover the funds in time? Will she be able to overcome her proximity and relationships with Gregg and Logan to determine the truth?

Great thriller! Fraud, fame, lies, murder (maybe?) and kickboxing; what’s not to love? The financial aspect made it especially fascinating and the sports competition element had this meeting planner smiling at the peek behind the curtain of large scale event planning. Add in one more connection, it was set in Minneapolis, a city I fell in love with while at a large scale sports event, and I was hooked! Highly recommend!

Meh. I'm not into MMA or kickboxing so the plot involving an empire built on fighting gyms sort of put me off the story.

This thriller made me happy. I feel funny saying that but it really did give me the warm and fuzzies! I tend to think of thrillers as pretty average, even when they are good, they are nothing to write home about. This is mostly because I tend to prefer character driven stories, and thrillers are, by nature, plot driven, so I feel like there’s less substance.
I’m rising above my own judgment here because I can’t deny the smile on my face- this one is unique! It was different enough in premise to hook me. I mean the protagonist is a forensic accountant so...nerd alert! Looking for fraud in spreadsheets and balance ledgers...totally here for it. It was a plot driven page turner and although the twists weren’t mind blowing shockers, I did want to keep reading to see what happened next! And I cared about the characters!
Anyway, happy and smiling at the end is worth mentioning and I would totally recommend this to anyone looking for a fast paced, out of the ordinary thriller. Don’t worry, if spreadsheets don’t get you too excited, I promise there’s other stuff in this story that will! Like kickboxing! And theft! And people doing shady things!
“Luck isn’t divine intervention. Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.”
