Read Harder Challenge Task 18: Read a superhero comic with a female lead.

An entertaining reinvisioning of WWII, wherein women play integral roles in combat/espionage. I enjoyed the stories, and that the comic was mostly drawn by women. I don't really have a whole lot of background with D.C. Comics though, so while a lot of the characters were from other comics in their repertoire (Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Supergirl, etc.), it kind of felt like they were recycling characters instead of creating a new series of badass women, which would have been pretty sweet.

That said, I really liked Batwoman's story, probably best of all of them, so maybe I will go out of my way to read more comics featuring her.

The story is jam-packed with delights and—for someone like me who isn't fluent in comics—confusions. But the art more than makes up for it.

I bought Bombshells volume 1 sight unseen, and this book is a good reason not to do that in the future. Some of the art is excellent, including the covers and the art by the penciller named on the book cover, Marguerite Sauvage. She drew only the first issue and maybe a few subsequent pages. The rest of the art is hit-or-miss.

The story is also hit-or-miss. It's all setups and no conclusion. Surprisingly, knowing my usual tastes, the most fun parts are the ones with Harley Quinn. I also liked the Batwoman sections.

I wanted to love this, but I was just so confused. This was my first DC graphic novel / comic and I don’t know wether I should have read some others before starting this one. I also didn’t love the setting, but that’s a personal preference I have in books. Wartime is not really something I enjoy / am interested in reading about. However I absolutely loved the f/f aspects. Always here for those LGBTQ+ themes.
Sadly I don’t think I’ll be continuing on with this series.

The writers did a fabulous job of re-setting everyone's favorite DC female characters into the WWII ear. This is heaps of fun. My biggest complaints are that the art is uneven in quality (great job having a different art style for each character arc, though), and that it's a little bit difficult to hold interest with so many characters. The latter isn't too big of a deal, because it just means that I should read the second volume to read about what happens and see how the women end up meeting.

I love this book SO much. It's honestly been a while since I loved a comic so much. The art is beautiful and it's all about these amazing, kind, badass, super women without being preachy (I can love dig preachy, but I sometimes have an issue with big companies giving a woman a book and suddenly acting like they're God's gift to feminism). I loved the way it retold history and reinvented such iconic characters. And, as I said, the art is absolutely beautiful. I love it.
